This rumour is supported by Asymco's analyst Horace Dediu who believes that Apple's future will indeed consist of a new generation of device every six months. This assumption is based on the statement of former Apple CEO John Sculley.

Not what I expected

I?m skeptical of pretty much everything and I had few expectations of APE going in. ?I read What the Plus? and appreciated Kawasaki?s enthusiasm despite the fact he might have been overstating the case for G+ a little. ?I enjoyed Enchantment?very much, though it left me with the impression that Kawasaki was a rose-colored glasses sort of guy. ?When I was offered an advance copy of the APE book, I expected a feel-good collection of stories.

It turns out Guy Kawasaki is a pragmatist. ? Not only that, he?s willing to call you out on your stuff. ?You may want to write a published book for profit, esteem or to prestige ? and G.K. writes about how ill-conceived those motivations are. ?An affirmation by a publishing house isn?t necessary if you have a message that people needs to hear. ?And self-publishing gives authors agility and freedom that traditional publishers cannot mimic.

He is brutally honest about the corporate publishing process, and uses author-publisher-entrepreneur?as a framework to describe (in?astonishing?detail) the painstaking work that must be done to bring a big idea to fruition. ?You need an editor. ?You need a?copy-editor? ?You need a copy of the Chicago Manual of Style. ?Not only did I learn an extraordinary amount about publishing and writing, but as a begrudging reader of haphazardly conceived books I frequently nodded ?Amen.?

And if you still doubt G.K.?s pragmatism, he even advises using Microsoft Word to write your manuscript. ?Quite an admission from the former Chief Evangelist for Apple.

Maybe I?m the one wearing rose-colored glasses, but Guy?Kawasaki?s?Author, Publisher,?Entrepreneur?made me realize how accessible the technology for self-publishing is. ?As someone who publishes short-form essays by?Beth?McShane,?Erin?Feldman,?Margie?Clayman?and?Pete?Trapasso?every month, the thought that they could elaborate their insights for mass-consumption is pretty special.

APE may not change the world. ?But it?s honest, it?s inspiring and it?s accessible. ?If the world were a meritocracy, it would be Guy Kawasaki?s best?selling?book and it would spawn a litany of great books written by people who otherwise would have never considered writing them.

Police: US Sen. Crapo arrested, charged with DUI in Washington suburb

ALEXANDRIA, Va. ? Authorities say U.S. Sen. Michael Crapo has been arrested and charged with driving under the influence in a Washington, D.C. suburb.

Police in Alexandria, Va., said Sunday that the Idaho Republican was pulled over early Sunday morning after his vehicle ran a red light. Police spokesman Jody Donaldson said Crapo failed field sobriety tests and was arrested at about 12:45 a.m. without incident. He was transported to the Alexandria jail and released on an unsecured $1,000 bond at about 5 a.m..

Donaldson said he didn't immediately know what Crapo's blood alcohol level was.

Crapo has a Jan. 4 court date.

A Crapo spokesman couldn't be immediately reached for comment Sunday night.

Crapo has been in the Senate since 1998, and served for six years in the House before that.

BANGKOK (AP) ? With just hours left before the U.S. hits the "fiscal cliff," stocks on the other side of the world wilted as investors sold off riskier assets to lock in profits just in case budget negotiations fail in Washington.

American political leaders face a Monday night deadline to reach an agreement before steep tax increases and spending cuts begin to take effect Jan. 1 ? this, at a time when the U.S. economy is still struggling to recover from the last recession.

Democrats and Republicans have failed so far to reach a budget deal despite intense negotiations. Much of the impasse centers on how to address the automatic tax increases that take effect in 2013. That's when tax cuts first enacted under President George W. Bush, and extended under President Barack Obama, are scheduled to expire.

That would drive taxes up for nearly all Americans and deplete the already fragile economy of $600 billion. And budget cuts of 8 percent or 9 percent would hit most of the federal government, touching all sorts of things from the military to weather forecasting.

Some economists predict the tax-and-spending effects of the fiscal cliff could eventually throw the economy into recession. If the deadline passes, politicians still have a few weeks to keep the tax hikes and spending cuts at bay by repealing them retroactively once a deal is reached.

Still, the failure to adhere to the deadline will be bad for investor confidence, according to Francis Lun, managing director of Lyncean Holdings in Hong Kong.

"I think the market reaction to that will be very negative. This means the U.S. will never be able to bring its house in order. And the deficit will continue to accumulate," Lun said. "No meaningful reform and no solution in sight. You can throw confidence out of the window."

The uncertainty drove down stock markets on the last trading day of the year. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.5 percent to 4,648.90. Hong Kong's Hang Seng, trading for a half-day, was flat at 22,668.48. Benchmarks in New Zealand, Singapore and India also declined. Mainland Chinese stocks rose. Markets in Japan and South Korea were closed for the New Year's holidays.

Even if Washington bypasses the fiscal cliff, the next crisis is just around the corner, in late February or early March, when the government reaches a $16.4 trillion ceiling on the amount of money it can borrow.

Republicans won't go along with raising the limit on government borrowing unless the increase is matched by spending cuts to help attack the long-term debt problem. Failing to raise the debt ceiling could lead to a first-ever U.S. default that would roil the financial markets and shake worldwide confidence in the United States.

Compounding that is U.S. earnings season in February, according to Peter Esho, chief market analyst at CityIndex in Sydney.

"There are some very aggressive assumptions for earnings to improve in 2013 and ... if the earnings numbers don't meet expectations, it is going to be quite disappointing," Esho said.

Benchmark oil for February delivery fell 8 cents to $90.72 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract fell 7 cents to finish at $90.80 per barrel in New York on Friday.

In currencies, the euro fell to $1.3215 from $1.3221 late Friday in New York. The dollar fell to 85.95 yen from 86.07 yen.

Two new orchid species found

One of the world's newest orchid species is also its most delicate, with tiny white flowers smaller than a dime. Yet the flower finds its home amid boulders near the banks of rushing streams in Cuba's remote eastern mountains.

The orchid is one of two new species identified by botanists in Cuba, a hotbed for orchids ? the largest and most diverse plant family in the world. The islands of the Caribbean have more the 25,000 species of orchids tucked into their forests and rivers.

The second new orchid, from the western tip of the island, dwarfs its neighbor in size. The flower's showy purple and green petals are similar to a daffodil in appearance, spreading more than 2.5 inches, with up to 20 blooms on one plant.

Like many orchids, the flower, dubbed Encyclia navarroi, is epiphytic, meaning it grows on other plants for support, but not for nutrients. Along the western coast, the species preferred to perch on plumeria and ficus, the researchers discovered.

Both new species are deceit pollinators, Vale said, enticing bees to spread their pollen without a reward. "Contrary to most plants, many orchids do not produce nectar or other substances to compensate insects and birds that visit them," he said.

Vale and his colleagues are studying orchids throughout the Greater Antilles (Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, Puerto Rico) to reconstruct their evolutionary history and analyze the effect of pollinators in their development. One of the mysteries they aim to solve is whether deceit orchids have greater diversity than other nectar-producing species.

"Despite the fact that T. riparia's flowers have a complete central petal, just like other species that make up a subgenre endemic to Cuba; the way they grow is very similar to a more widespread group that seems to have diverged on the neighboring island of Hispaniola," Vale said. "Our work provides molecular evidence of the greater relationship of T. riparia with these species on the neighboring island."

The findings were detailed in the October 2012 issue of the journal Systematic Botany and the April 2012 issue of the journal Annales Botanici Fennici.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton is expected to return to work next week, almost three weeks after being sidelined by a concussion.

Just like humans, our pets are susceptible to illness and disease. Specific breeds are more prone to certain ailments, but there are some health problems that are common among all dogs. Interestingly enough, the most common dog illnesses are very similar to what humans typically suffer from. The first is ear infections, which usually form from a wax buildup, ear mites, and occasionally bacteria or fungus. Dogs with longer ears and those with hair on the underside of the ear flaps are more likely to get ear infections. With proper grooming and ear cleaning, you can greatly reduce the dog?s risk. Watch for symptoms such as shaking of the head, sensitivity to ears being touched, and scratching of the ears.

Canine skin allergies come in as close second. The dog may also have inhalant allergies from mold, dust, or pollen. Symptoms include scratching, biting, constant licking, and biting at the feet. The itching will be most severe on the feet, groin, and armpits and the skin will become thickened and produce a strong odor. Other causes of allergies are food and flea bites. The symptoms will be similar but the dog will also have ear inflammation, shaking of the head, anal itching, and rubbing the face on carpeting.

Another skin ailment is pyoderma, which is a skin infection caused by bacteria. Skin fold pyoderma is caused when the folds of the skin rub together. It can also be caused by allergies and parasites, so if you don?t treat ailment number two, it can easily turn into ailment number three. An infected area will show redness, swelling, hair loss, and sometimes blisters. If left untreated, it can cause severe pain, pus or blood, and a foul odor. A simple antibiotic can treat it, but in order to prevent it, always properly groom your dog.

At some point in time, your dog probably has vomited. This is known as gastritis. While it is often a one time occurrence, constant vomiting is a very serious condition. There is a long list of possible causes including food allergy, chemical ingestion, medication, inflammatory bowel disease, and stomach cancer. Immediately take your dog to the veterinarian if there is blood in the vomit, weakness, severe weight loss, diarrhea, or lack of appetite.

The fifth most common ailment is enteritis, or inflammation of the small intestines. Bacteria and viruses are usually the culprit. Diarrhea is the number one sign. However, don?t rush your dog off to the vet just yet. If the diarrhea is frequent or there is blood in the stool, then there is serious cause for concern. Only lab tests can determine the specific cause.

Always be on your guard and look for signs that your dog is not well. Eventually, your dog will need to be treated for something. Be prepared with dog health insurance or its alternatives and make frequent checkups part of your routine.

HOUSTON (AP) ? Former President George H.W. Bush is being treated in the intensive care unit at a Houston hospital after suffering "a series of setbacks," including a stubborn fever, his spokesman said.

In a brief email Wednesday, Jim McGrath, Bush's spokesman in Houston, said the 88-year-old former leader had been admitted Sunday to the ICU at Methodist Hospital. McGrath said Bush, the oldest living former U.S. president, was alert and talking to medical staff.

He said doctors are cautiously optimistic about Bush's treatment and that the former president "remains in guarded condition." He said Bush was surrounded by family.

Early Thursday, McGrath told The Associated Press he had no new information on Bush's condition and that he would release another statement "when events warrant it."

Bush has been hospitalized since Nov. 23, when he was admitted for a lingering cough related to bronchitis after having been in and out of the hospital for complications related to the illness.

A fever that kept Bush in the hospital over Christmas had gotten worse and doctors had put him on a liquids-only diet Wednesday following "a series of setbacks."

"It's an elevated fever, so it's actually gone up in the last day or two," McGrath said. "It's a stubborn fever that won't go away."

But he said the cough that initially brought Bush to the hospital had improved.

Bush was visited on Christmas by his wife, Barbara, his son, Neil, and Neil's wife, Maria, and a grandson, McGrath said. Bush's daughter, Dorothy, arrived Wednesday in Houston from Bethesda, Md. The 41st president has also been visited by his sons, George W. Bush, the 43rd president, and Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida.

He has also been visited by former Secretary of State James A. Baker III, a longtime confidant.

Bush and his wife live in Houston during the winter and spend their summers at a home in Kennebunkport, Maine.

The former president was a naval aviator in World War II ? at one point the youngest in the Navy ? and was shot down over the Pacific. He's skydived on at least three of his birthdays since leaving the White House in 1992.

He suffers from a form of Parkinson's disease and in recent years has used a wheelchair to get around.

2012: The Year in TV Moments

Despite its shockingly handsome Republican nominee and its pinup Democrat, the 2012 campaign was the least telegenic presidential contest I can remember. There were no mobs of young people, ecstatic and worshipful, as in 2008; no surreal scenes of dimpled and be-chadded ballots, as in 2000; no Bill Clinton, shrugging off adultery, or Ross Perot, shrugging off reality, as in 1992. For all his pomade and teeth, Romney managed to be the most repellent television candidate since Dukakis. And Barack Obama?we?d seen enough of him already.

So it?s fitting that the most memorable TV moment of the presidential campaign belonged to neither candidate. In retrospect (and at Nate Silver?s house), the second presidential debate probably didn?t change the election results very much, but at the time it seemed like the campaign hung in the balance. Romney, having cuffed and clawed Obama like a cat with a mouse in the first debate, was finally surging. Meanwhile, Democrats were panicking that their candidate wasn?t trying hard, and that he couldn?t be bothered. For most of the 90 minutes, both candidates, preening and aggro, appeared to be running for douchebag-in-chief, each more of an ass than any man who doesn?t trade bonds on Wall Street should ever be.

Candy Crowley of CNN handled the unenviable job of moderating this jerk-fest very capably, politely and firmly steering Romney and Obama back to their neutral corners. Then, three-quarters of the way through the debate, Crowley gave us the most important televised moment of the campaign. Romney had launched a full frontal assault against the president?s handling of the Benghazi attack, and?either confused or poorly prepared?thought he saw an opportunity to trap the president on the question of whether he had called the attack an act of terror. Obama said he had done so the day after Benghazi. The president appeared taken aback by the vigor of Romney?s challenge, though, and didn?t persuasively rebut Romney when the challenger insisted that the president didn?t call it terrorism for 14 days.

At this moment, Crowley jumped in to save him. ?He did, in fact, sir,? call it an act of terror, she interrupted. Obama, recognizing that he?d been rescued, immediately chimed in: ?Can you say that a little louder, Candy???winning laughs and applause from an audience that was supposed to be silent. Crowley provided the encore, adding immediately, ?He did call it an act of terror.?

Romney?s most aggressive attack had been turned back, and in a humiliating fashion. He had shown himself unprepared, had left himself open to a devastating counterattack?all the more deadly because it came from the moderator rather than his opponent. Was this the event that lost Romney the election? Of course not. He found so many different ways to lose it. But at that moment you could hear the air start leaking from the Romney balloon, and it kept leaking until Election Day.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - The most common form of skin cancer is non-melanoma skin cancer. We know that people affected by it are at an increased risk for developing another type of cancer later in life.

Researchers compared 769 people who had non-melanoma skin cancer to over 18,000 people without skin cancer. Results showed that over a 16-year period, people who had skin cancer were twice as likely to develop a second non-skin cancer as healthy controls.

The strongest link between skin cancer and developing a later, secondary cancer occurred in the youngest patients. They were aged 25 to 54.

There are approximately one million cases of skin cancer in the United States each year.

You?ve got to realize this research came from the Journal of the National Cancer Institute and the work was done at the University of South Carolina, so there is definitely some validity to it; the study and its findings.

Facebook's new, Snapchat-like timed messaging (widely held to be sexting) app, Poke was coded in only 12 days, and part of that code was reportedly written by Facebook's founder and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg himself. Why is Facekbook telling and/or leaking that backstory? Josh Constine of TechCrunch writes:

We heard Facebook made attempts to buy [Snapchat], but the team wanted to stay independent. That?s when Facebook and Zuckerberg went into hacker mode. With just a few weeks until Apple stopped accepting submissions of new apps before Christmas, it would take a sprint to get Poke built in time.

So a small squad including Facebook Director Of Product Blake Ross kicked development into high gear, Zuckerberg lent a hand with the programming, designers Mike Matas and Sharon Hwang created the icon, and Facebook just made the deadline and launched the Poke app this morning.

People often think they have an idea for the "next big app" and ask how to get it made without getting "ripped off". It's a cliche that ideas are a dime a dozen and implementation and execution are where the value resides. But that's never been true either. Whether it was Microsoft in the early days of the PC, or Zynga or Facebook now, anything bootstrapped that gets significant attention and momentum is destined to be bought or simply cloned.

Facebook Camera with filters wouldn't have done anything to stop or even slow Instagram in the vitally important, incredibly attractive area of online photo sharing (i.e storing). Poke will either do enough, or the capricious offshoot of the IM space isn't important enough, for Facebook to spend more money, or more than 12 weeks on it.

Oh, and that voice you hear say "POKE!" when a new one arrives? That's supposedly Zuckerberg's own as well.

How badly Poke hurts Snapchat remains to be seen, as does Poke's long-term importance to Facebook itself. Is it a fad-app whose lifespan mirrors its short development time, or is it core functionality that's here for the long haul? I guess we'll see if/when Poke secures a place on the Home screen next to Instagram when the Facebook phone finally launches...

William Spengler Identified As Webster Firefighter Shooter; Killed Grandmother In 1980s

The shooter who shot and killed two responding firefighters and injured two others in Webster, New York this morning has been identified as convicted killer William Spengler, 62.

Police say that Spengler spent 17 years in prison for killing his grandmother in 1980. He was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after the violence at the fire this morning.

Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering said Spengler set a home on fire on Lake Road and waited for firefighters to arrive, ambushing them with gunfire. His motive is unclear. The shooting killed Lt. Mike Chiapperini, 43, a volunteer firefighter and Webster Police Department?s public information officer, and firefighter Tomasz Kaczowka. Theodore Scardino and Joseph Hofsetter were also shot and are recovering in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.

In addition a police officer from Greece who was driving by was hit by shrapnel and injured.

Several weapons were used at the shooting today, including "at least" an assault rifle, Pickering said.

"This is an individual who obviously had a lot of problems," he said, adding that there were "probably some mental health issues."

Pickering said Spengler was arrested in 1980 and convicted of killing his grandmother, serving time until 1998.

The fires are reportedly under control, Webster police officials said at a press conference. Four homes were completely destroyed in the blaze and four more were damaged.
