If Auto Repairs Costs Too Much Just Donate Your Vehicle To ...

Are you currently having a dilemma regarding the repairs that you must do with your auto? You think that it?s too costly and that you?d prefer to buy a brand new one than shell out a lot of money for that car? No need to be worried about that automobile that?s costing you plenty of money just give it to donate car New York and your troubles will be resolved since you don?t only get yourself a tax deduction you will also help kids who are struggling with cancer.

But at times you?ll still ponder why it is so costly to fix your automobile. Cost of ownership is actually higher on modern automobiles, mainly because they?re more capable, a lot cleaner and fuel-efficient and a lot safer. That 1965 Mustang you used to repair for a few dollars does not come near to meeting the current government regulations, goes down the road like a tractor compared with today?s car and had several electronic doodads we now overlook. Ultimately, however, we spend on the technology-a 1965 Mustang cost merely $2500-both initially as well as for repairs.

Labor charges can also be a reason why your vehicle repair is costly. A shop?s labor rate is the hourly rate it charges for work. The idea of ?book time? signifies average time frame it requires to carry out a particular car repair or maintenance task. This is a number that is set depending on how long it requires a factory mechanic (or ?technician,? as is the typical industry parlance) to complete the job, but with a modifier applied in order to establish a more realistic time which a less trained technician takes. It is the automotive tech?s obligation to carry out the work within that ?book time? window, even though sometimes repairs take more time or can be carried out quicker. Shop labor fees differ with the geographical area of the country and are competitive within a specific area. Labor prices usually run $80-$150 every hour nationwide.

You?ve gotten a number of repair estimates, and it appears like it is time to bid farewell to your outdated vehicle and resign yourself to the total loss. When this happens, your current insurer gives you an idea of what they think your car will be worth. This number will be based on private party sales, surveys of dealers, value guide books, and more.

Keep in mind that you won?t have to accept the first figure your current insurer is quoting you and move on. Carry out your own research regarding your auto?s actual cash value (ACV) making use of online pricing websites, the Kelley Blue Book, and other tools. In case you come up with a figure that?s significantly greater than your insurer?s, you may request that they adjust their particular estimate. You?ll strengthen your case if you can present documents aiding what you believe your automobile is worth.

Buying a brand new car could be better than repairing your old automobile specifically if the cost is way too high. If perhaps you?ve already decided to get a new car and replace that old one, then you can make the most from your unwanted vehicle when you give it to donate your car New York.

In case you decide to donate your automobile instead of to fix it then get in touch with donate car New York. A reliable organization wherein you may give your vehicle donation is donate your car New York.

Aircraft Fractional Ownership

For many, owning a private aircraft is about the state, with the comfort is important. As the possession of aircraft is a significant investment, and because many look smart before you jump, fractional ownership is very popular.

Here's how it works. With fractional ownership you buy an "interest" in the plane. An airline, as part of its fleet, general aviation, operating the aircraft. How exploited a fractional ownershipthe aircraft virtually on demand. Of course you can not be a million times per year. Your investment is a limit of flight hours.

In general, if you want to fly 200 hours or less per year, fractional ownership can be a good option for you. Moreover, as the owner does not have to worry about a lot of stuff that goes into private aircraft ownership. For example, the management company will provide pilots, maintenance and insurance for your aircraft. You can also use the catering and other great services.

As the owner of a private airplane, flight planning coming days and weeks is a thing of the past. Once an owner, you simply remove the handset and your plane is ready in a few hours where you want it and where you want to go. And "the ultimate in comfort.

The size of the plants will vary with the plan. Typically, with fractional ownership is divided into eighths. Today, these deals on allType of aircraft, including small piston engine aircraft. Fractional ownership is a great first step into the arena in private planes.

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? Libya's new rulers believe Moammar Gadhafi may be hiding in the southern desert, possibly in a vast area near the Algerian border, under the protection of ethnic Tuareg fighters, an official said Wednesday.

Abdel-Rahman Busin, a military spokesman in Tripoli, also said revolutionary forces knew Gadhafi's son, Seif al-Islam, was in the regime stronghold of Bani Walid two weeks ago because they held negotiations about his possible surrender. But he said the talks had broken down and it was not known if he was still in the town.

Revolutionary forces gained control of Tripoli and much of the rest of the North African nation late last month, but the longtime leader fled and has been trying to rally supporters from hiding as fighting continues on three fronts. His sons also escaped and there have been several unconfirmed reports about their whereabouts.

Military officials fear Gadhafi may still be able to stoke violence from his hiding place.

Busin said the military has intelligence that Gadhafi is hiding in the vast southern desert with help from Tuareg fighters. Ethnic Tuaregs, whose nomadic community spans the desert border of Niger, Mali, Libya, Algeria and Chad, are among Gadhafi's strongest remaining supporters.

"We do believe that he is somewhere in that region and we do know that Tuaregs are supporting him, probably because he's paying them," Busin said.

He did not offer evidence and acknowledged the military cannot confirm anything.

"It's a very large bit of land to cover. We don't have the people to cover it all and he could move around quite freely," Busin told The Associated Press.

One report suggested Gadhafi was southwest of the desert town of Sabha, Busin said. He also said a recent attack on the border town of Ghadamis raised suspicion that the fugitive leader was hiding in the surrounding region, a vast area near the Algerian frontier. "Possibly they were just creating a diversion," he said.

Pro-Gadhafi gunmen crossed the border from Algeria to attack revolutionary forces in Ghadamis last week, killing at least nine people, local officials said.

Ali al-Mana, the Ghadamis representative on the National Transitional Council, said there was no confirmation that Gadhafi was in the city.

Many Libyans believe Ghadafi's son and other regime members are hiding in Bani Walid, 90 miles (140 kilometers) southeast of Tripoli, where revolutionary fighters have been stalemated with loyalist fighters for weeks.

Republican candidates seek Trump stamp of approval (AP)

NEW YORK ? Donald Trump has become a must-stop for GOP candidates looking for advice or hoping to bask in the celebrity real estate mogul's star power.

All the major Republican presidential hopefuls have sought an audience with Trump, just months after President Barack Obama dismissed the TV reality show personality as a "carnival barker" for raising debunked questions about Obama's citizenship.

Trump's money and fame as host of "Celebrity Apprentice" are part of the draw for GOP candidates. But Republican strategists say candidates could also learn a lot politically from Trump, whose aggressive criticism of Obama and blunt portrait of the U.S. as a nation in decline have resonated with conservative voters looking for an in-your-face challenge to the president.

"Trump created a position of playing offense and took it right to President Obama and his policies," said John McLaughlin, a GOP pollster who has worked with Trump, who flirted briefly with a presidential bid. "He speaks in plain language about jobs lost at home, and our loss of prestige overseas. He's been forthright and willing to put in a sentence what the average person feels."

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is the next presidential hopeful scheduled to meet with Trump, on Monday in New York. Texas Gov. Rick Perry dined with Trump earlier this month at a fancy Manhattan restaurant. Sarah Palin, still toying with a potential presidential bid, shared pizza with Trump and his wife, Melania, in Times Square last spring. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann visited Trump's penthouse atop the Trump Tower in July.

Thump even sent a videotaped message to the Faith and Freedom Coalition forum in Florida where all the major GOP contenders spoke Thursday.

"It's very important that we pick the right person. If we pick the wrong person we're going to have four more years of this nonsense in Washington. Obama must be defeated," Trump told the gathering.

Aligning themselves with Trump could help Republicans in a GOP primary because conservatives who make up the base of the party generally cheer him. But candidates risk losing moderates, independents and other general election voters turned off by Trump's crusade against Obama's birth certificate.

The candidates haven't fully embraced the issues Trump champions, like bashing the OPEC oil cartel and demanding that countries like Libya and Iraq repay the U.S. for military assistance. But they've also adopted some of Trump's other themes as well as his blunt tone.

Releasing his 59-point jobs plan earlier this month, Romney echoed Trump's tough talk against China, which Trump has accused of "stealing" U.S. manufacturing jobs through currency manipulation.

"I'll clamp down on the cheaters, and China is the worst example of that," Romney said, vowing as president to order the Treasury Department to designate China a "currency manipulator." Such a designation could trigger trade sanctions against China, a major U.S. trading partner and its biggest foreign lender.

Nearly all the candidates repeated a warning that America's stature is declining in the eyes of the world after Trump cast the U.S. under Obama as a global "laughingstock" and "whipping boy" in a well-received speech to the Conservative Political Action Committee conference last winter.

Perry, in a new campaign video, describes the U.S. as "the least great hope of mankind" and states, "We don't need a president who apologizes for America. I love America."

Pizza magnate Herman Cain has called the U.S. "a nation of crises." Former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman says "What we're seeing playing out in America is a human tragedy."

To be sure, not all the rhetoric can be traced to Trump, who is largely echoing the sense of America under siege that has animated many conservatives. But Trump spokesman Michael Cohen, noting the candidates' tone and themes, said "I just wish they would give Mr. Trump the credit now that they're emulating his views."

Trump's reputation was in danger of taking a hit last spring, when he almost single-handedly revived questions about Obama's birthplace and demanded to see the so-called "long form" birth certificate showing the president was born in Hawaii in 1961. Until that point, the so-called "birther' controversy, suggesting Obama had been born outside the U.S. and not eligible to be president, had been promoted by fringe elements of the Republican Party.

Trump's efforts to stoke the issue succeeded in part ? Obama did release his long-form birth certificate after years of refusing to do so, putting the issue to rest for good.

"We're not going to be able to solve our problems if we get distracted by side shows and carnival barkers," Obama said announcing the release of the birth certificate, a clear shot at Trump.

Obama went even further days later, using his appearance at the White House Correspondents Dinner to mock Trump, who was sitting in the audience.

"No one is prouder to put this birth certificate to rest than The Donald. Now he can get to focusing on the issues that matter. Like, did we fake the moon landing? What really happened at Roswell?" Obama said. The audience laughed and cheered while Trump glowered.

Cyclists at higher risk from inhaled soot

London, Sep 26

Cyclists in cities inhale more black carbon than pedestrians -- and this may damage their lungs, evidence shows.

Automobiles discharge a huge quantity of soot or black carbon particles from their exhausts. Increasing evidence shows their inhalation is linked with a range of health effects, including heart attacks and reduced lung function.

Researchers led by Jonathan Grigg, professor from Barts and the London School of Medicine, investigated how cyclists have higher personal exposure to black carbon while commuting to work.

They compared the lung dose of soot in cyclists and pedestrians by sampling a lower airway cell called the airway macrophage, which ingests foreign material, according to a Barts statement.

The researchers collected sputum samples from adults who regularly cycled to work and an equal number of pedestrians. They were non-smoking healthy urban commuters aged between 18 and 40 years.

The results showed that cyclists have 2.3-times more black carbon in their lungs when compared with pedestrians. The probability that this difference occurred by chance is less than 1 in 100.

Chinedu Nwokoro, one of the researchers and an active cyclist, said: "The results have shown that cycling in a large city increases exposure to black carbon.

"This could be (because) cyclists breathe more deeply and at a quicker rate than pedestrians while in closer proximity to exhaust fumes, which could increase the number of airborne particles penetrating the lungs."

The research was presented at the European Respiratory Society's Annual Congress in Amsterdam Sunday.

How graphene's electrical properties can be tuned

Monday, September 26, 2011

An accidental discovery in a physicist's laboratory at the University of California, Riverside provides a unique route for tuning the electrical properties of graphene, nature's thinnest elastic material. This route holds great promise for replacing silicon with graphene in the microchip industry.

The researchers found that stacking up three layers of graphene, like pancakes, significantly modifies the material's electrical properties. When they fabricated trilayer graphene in the lab and measured its conductance, they found, to their surprise, that depending on how the layers were stacked some of the trilayer graphene devices were conducting while others were insulating.

"What we stumbled upon is a simple and convenient 'knob' for tuning graphene sheets' electrical properties," said Jeanie Lau, an associate professor of physics and astronomy, whose lab made the serendipitous finding.

Study results appeared online Sept. 25 in Nature Physics.

Graphene is a one-atom thick sheet of carbon atoms arranged in hexagonal rings. Bearing excellent material properties, such as high current-carrying capacity and thermal conductivity, this "wonder material" is ideally suited for creating components for semiconductor circuits and computers.

Because of the planar and chicken wire-like structure of graphene, its sheets lend themselves well to stacking in what is called 'Bernal stacking,' the stacking fashion of graphene sheets.

In a Bernal-stacked bilayer, one corner of the hexagons of the second sheet is located above the center of the hexagons of the bottom sheet. In Bernal-stacked trilayer (ABA), the top (third) sheet is exactly on top of the lowest sheet. In rhombohedral-stacked (ABC) trilayer, the top sheet is shifted by the distance of an atom, so that the top (third) sheet and the lowest sheet form a Bernal stacking as well.

"The most stable form of trilayer graphene is ABA, which behaves like a metal," Lau explained. "Amazingly, if we simply shift the entire topmost layer by the distance of a single atom, the trilayer ? now with ABC or rhombohedral stacking ? becomes insulating. Why this happens is not clear as yet. It could be induced by electronic interactions. We eagerly await an explanation from theorists!"

Her lab used Raman spectroscopy to examine the graphene devices' stacking orders. Next the lab plans to investigate the nature of the insulating state in ABC-stacked graphene. In this kind of stacked graphene, they also plan to study the band gap ? a range in energy, critical for digital applications, in which no electrons can exist.

"The presence of the gap in ABC-stacked graphene that arises, we believe, from enhanced electronic interactions is interesting since it is not expected from theoretical calculations," Lau said. "Understanding this gap is particularly important for the major challenge of band gap engineering in graphene electronics."

Besides graphene, Lau studies nanowires and carbon nanotubes. Her research has helped physicists gain fundamental understanding of how atoms and electrons behave when they are ruled by quantum mechanics. Her lab studies novel electrical properties that arise from the quantum confinement of atoms and charges to nanoscale systems. Her research team has shown that graphene can act as an atomic-scale billiard table, with electric charges acting as billiard balls.

Her other research interests include superconductivity, thermal management and electronic transport in nanostructures, and engineering new classes of nanoscale devices.

An educational component of Lau's research effort is the active involvement of high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, especially minority and women, in her cutting-edge research, taking advantage of the ethnic diversity of UCR's student population and local communities. She is a founding faculty member of the UCR Undergraduate Research Journal. She also organized a "Women in Physics" lunch group that provides a friendly platform for female students, postdocs and faculty members to interact.

After receiving her bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Chicago in 1994, Lau proceeded to Harvard University from where she received her master's and doctoral degrees in physics in 1997 and 2001, respectively. She joined UCR in 2004, after an appointment as a research associate in the Hewlett-Packard Laboratory.

Lau's awards and honors include a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, 2009; a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, 2008; the Richter Fellowship for Undergraduate Research, 1992; a David W. Grainger Senior Scholarship, 1993; and a Robert T. Poe Faculty Development Grant from the Chinese-American Faculty Association of Southern California, 2007. She has published more than 60 research articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Lau, a member of UCR's Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering, was joined in the research by W. Bao (the first author of the research paper), L. Jing, J. Velasco Jr., Y. Lee, G. Liu, D. Tran and M. Bockrath at UCR; B. Stanley at Caltech; M. Aykol and S. B. Cronin at the University of Southern California; D. Smirnov at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Fla.; M. Koshino at Tohoku University, Japan; and E. McCann at Lancaster University, United Kingdom.

Our redesigned Web site will help people who want to find quality home improvement close to town.

Cleveland, OH (PRWEB) September 24, 2011

Ohio Window and Door, the state?s premier home improvement company, has launched a new website and an initiative designed to help consumers make more informed choices about energy efficient windows, patio doors and the company?s other services.

?Our dedication to providing Ohioans with the best possible customer service is being extended to our Internet presence,? said Jim Fisher, owner of Ohio Window and Door. ?Someone looking for new windows, doors, roofing and attic insulation can now find resources close to home more quickly.?

Fisher chose to have his new website search engine optimized, which removes much of the guesswork from seeking a particular service or business. SEO is growing technology that enables Fisher?s website to appear on the first page of Google searches and be a more information-rich resource. Links to particular energy-saving services such as attic insulation, window replacement and triple pane windows are now easier to find.

?The Internet is a crowded place and it can be difficult to locate what you are looking for,? said Fisher. ?Our redesigned website will help people who want to find quality home improvement close to town. People can search by city, by the type of work they want done, or both.

?It is very targeted,? he continued. ?Ultimately, this will make it easier for consumers to find what they need with fewer mouse clicks.?

Search Engine Optimization is fast becoming this shortcut to consumer awareness. It is a discipline that, in expert hands, can help businesses stand out in a crowd.

The company installs replacement and patio doors, many types of windows, attic insulation and roof systems in Cleveland as well as Akron, Columbus, Cincinnati, Dayton, Toledo, Tallmadge, Mogadore, Wadsworth, Canton, Cuyahoga Falls, Brecksville, Medina and Fairlawn.

Among the most highly searched services, Fisher said, is window replacement. ?Many Ohioans want a window that is well insulated against the temperatures outside. They want windows that keep damaging UV rays out of the home to protect loved ones from sunburn and stop furniture from fading, and they want the best protection against extreme weather conditions and moisture. With an optimized website, they can find us quickly and more easily, and then make the best choice possible on their home improvement project.?

He's a Rocketman: Elton John Biopic in Development (omg!)

Elton John and his partner, David Furnish, are developing Rocketman, a biopic about the legendary singer/songwriter , Entertainment Weekly reports.

Still confused about what you're watching this season? Sample all the new shows here

The film will chronicle the life and epic career of the "Candle in the Wind" singer. Lee Hall (Billy Elliot) wrote the script.

"We've always thought there was a wonderful cinematic opportunity to tell Elton's life story," Furnish told the magazine. "But we wanted to wait until the time was exactly right. Elton feels very excited about doing it now ? he's in a very happy place in life right now and thinks it's a good time to artistically reflect on the past."

Check out these dramatic before-and-after pictures of celebrity weight loss

John and Furnish are currently on the hunt for a director and star -- or possibly several actors -- to portray the John. The script for Rocketman, which has already been completed, doesn't shy away from the low points of John's life. "Elton has lived a very extraordinary and unique life," Furnish continued. "You can't tell his life story without going to the dark places. We're going to touch on those too. But at the end, we want people to come away from the cinema feeling inspired and uplifted.

Would you pay to see a movie about John?

Salary gap between jobs? Consider a Payday Loan | personal ...

There are many types of help an individual between jobs when it comes to financing their lives between the shift from one employer to another. These methods run the gamut from simply utilizing saved money to borrowing money from friends and relatives. However, when an individual does not have sufficient funds in reserve or none of their associates can lend them money they may be in a bit of a fix. There is a way to help tide themselves over until their next payday, however. This helpmate comes in the form of a short term loan known as a payday loan.

A payday loan is a short term loan type that derives its name from the terms it is contracted under. Typically these loans are granted on a very short term basis determined by the next pay period of the borrower. These types of financial aids can be a major boon for any individual that needs enough money to tide them over between paycheques. Should an individual find themselves leaving one form of employment for another they may be able to use this sort of service to meet their immediate monetary needs.

The reason that many people will choose this method for crossing the salary gap between jobs is that there is usually little if any fuss or bother in regards to receiving one. A standard bank loan will require excellent credit, references, proof of income, and all manner of paperwork. However, ?>payday loans are type of financial transaction that typically only requires an individual to have two items in order. The first item is a bank account in good standing that is capable of receiving direct deposits and sending electronic transfers of funds. The second item is a steady source of income. These are requirements in the modern era since the cash advance services in existence have moved away from the old concept of accepting pre-dated cheques. They now use direct deposit.

With direct deposit and electronic funds transfers as the median through which money is transferred makes this loan both easy to obtain and incredibly quick to process. In many instances the borrower can have the money they seek in as little as a few minutes. Even if the process is not instant, most of the time they will receive it the same day they apply for it. Application for such a loan can be done online in as little as a few minutes.

Netflix Apologizes ? Kinda | Matt's Movies

I have to say, I missed most of the Netflix price-hike flap ? I was out getting a new hip. ?I?m a streaming-only customer anyway so it really hasn?t affected me. ?And I know I?m a little late to the story, but I absolutely love the apology video. ?I don?t know if the fact that they seemed to have recorded this with an iPhone in a parking lot is endearing or insane.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The seismic shift in college athletics has once again been diverted.

Unless there is a major surprise looming, the latest round of conference realignment will only produce a handful of changes. The 16-team superconference is again on hold.

The Pac-12 presidents and chancellors decided late Tuesday night not to expand, leaving Texas and Oklahoma to figure out a way to get along in the Big 12.

"After careful review we have determined that it is in the best interests of our member institutions, student-athletes and fans to remain a 12-team conference," Commissioner Larry Scott said in a statement. "While we have great respect for all of the institutions that have contacted us, and certain expansion proposals were financially attractive, we have a strong conference structure and culture of equality that we are committed to preserve."

Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech were considering a move from the Big 12 to the Pac-12 ? a move that could have killed the Big 12. After expanding from the Pac-10 with new members Utah and Colorado last year, members of the new Pac-12 decided not to stretch the league farther east.

"We were not surprised by the Pac 12's decision to not expand at this time," Oklahoma President David Boren said. "Even though we had decided not to apply for membership this year, we have developed a positive relationship with the leadership of the conference and we have kept them informed of the progress we've been making to gain agreement from the Big 12 for changes which will make the conference more stable in the future.

"Conference stability has been our first goal and we look forward to achieving that goal through continued membership in the Big 12 Conference."

Meanwhile, across the country in New York, Big East Commissioner John Marinatto emerged from a three-hour meeting with officials from the league's football schools to say his members "pledged to each other that they are committed to move forward together."

The Big East also has been staring at an uncertain future after Pittsburgh and Syracuse announced last weekend they are moving to the Atlantic Coast Conference.

But now it appears the Big East, like the Big 12, stands a good chance to survive, too ? for now.

Marinatto said all the league's members ? including Notre Dame and the seven other non-football members ? are committed to aggressively recruiting replacements for Syracuse and Pittsburgh, though he would not indicate which schools are candidates.

He said the league will enforce the 27-month notice agreement in its bylaws and not allow Syracuse and Pitt to leave until the 2014-15 academic year.

He also said he expects TCU to join the league in 2012 as previously agreed upon.

As for the Big 12, the board of regents at Texas and Oklahoma voted Monday to give their presidents the right to choose a new conference.

Oklahoma State was going to follow Oklahoma's lead and Texas Tech planned to do the same with Texas.

Texas and Oklahoma were not acting together. Texas officials had stated several times it wanted to keep the Big 12 alive.

Oklahoma officials said they were looking for stability and equal revenue sharing, which does not occur in the Big 12. Texas has its own cable television network and gets the biggest cut of the Big 12's revenue.

The Pac-12 has equal revenue distribution and would not change that for Texas. Without Texas in the deal, the Pac-12's leaders didn't have quite the appetite for expansion.

The Sooners and Longhorns, bitter rivals on the field, now need to work out some differences off it.

A person familiar with the schools' discussions said Texas and Oklahoma officials are expected to meet in the next few days to negotiate an agreement to keep the universities in the league for at least the next five years. The person requested anonymity because the meeting had not been announced.

Whether other schools would be invited to join that meeting was unclear Tuesday night.

Scott tried to bring Oklahoma and Texas into his conference last summer, but his bid to create a superconference called the Pac-16 fell short when Texas decided to stay in the Big 12, in part to start its own network.

Nebraska and Colorado did leave the Big 12, but Big 12 Commissioner Dan Beebe managed to keep the conference together.

When the Longhorn Network became a reality, Texas A&M had had enough.

A&M, which flirted with the Southeastern Conference last year, reached out to the SEC and ended up being invited to join that league earlier this month. That deal has not yet been finalized because some Big 12 members, such as Baylor and Iowa State, have not waived the right to possibly sue Texas A&M and the SEC.

But if the Big 12 and its new 13-year, $1 billion television deal reached with Fox Sports in April survives, the exit should be clear for Texas A&M. And the rest of the Big 12 can go back to looking for a replacement.

Maybe newly independent in football BYU?

After the Pac-10 grew by two, adding Colorado and Utah from the Mountain West, the league negotiated a landmark 12-year television contract with Fox and ESPN worth about $3 billion, allowing the conference to quadruple its media rights fees and start its own network.

"We have a very good situation and a bright future," Stanford athletic director Bob Bowlsby said.

It's hard to say for sure if this will put an end to conference realignment for a while. Many thought after last summer's maneuvering, things would settle down ? and that barely lasted a year.

ACC Commissioner John Swofford has said his league is comfortable with 14 members, which it will have when Pitt and Syracuse join, but is not "philosophically" opposed to expanding to 16.

Despite their latest pledge to work together, the Big East still seems susceptible to another raid by the ACC or maybe the SEC.

Adding UConn and possibly Rutgers, located in New Jersey, would allow the ACC to further extend its reach into the Northeast and the New York City television market.

The SEC will be up to 13 schools when Texas A&M's move becomes official and even though it has said it can stay at the number, it seems logical to go to 14.

West Virginia and Missouri have both been speculated to be candidates and there were reports earlier Tuesday that the SEC and Missouri had a tentative agreement.

The SEC shot that down.

"The Southeastern Conference has not agreed formally or informally to accept any institution other than Texas A&M, and there have not been conference discussions regarding changes in divisional alignments," SEC associate commissioner Charles Bloom said.

With Texas and Oklahoma still around, there might not be a reason for Missouri to relocate.

Despite all the angst that realignment has caused many in major college athletics over the past month, sweeping change has seemingly been avoided.

Settlement reached on eve of September 11 airline trial (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? What could have been the only wrongful death trial stemming from the September 11, 2001, attacks ended on Monday after the two sides reached a settlement.

The 2002 lawsuit, filed by the mother of Mark Bavis who died when United Airlines Flight 175 slammed into the World Trade Center, had accused United Airlines of negligence in allowing the five hijackers to board the flight armed.

The lawsuit in Manhattan federal court had been the only one of dozens filed after the attacks not to have resulted in a settlement until now.

The Bavis family had initially seemed intent on having the lawsuit heard by a jury of ordinary New Yorkers, and the trial had been slated for November.

There were no details of the settlement in a one-paragraph court document saying the parties had agreed to dismiss the lawsuit. The case had been presided over by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, who has overseen much of the post-September 11 litigation.

"The family has spent nine grueling years trying to get this case to trial," the family's attorney, Donald Migliori, said. But they ultimately decided the "nature of the trial would be too limited."

The lawsuit had also named Huntleigh USA Corp, the security firm contracted by the airline to run passenger screening at Logan International Airport in Boston, where the flight originated.

The Bavis family on Friday had filed over 100 court exhibits aiming to give a detailed account of what it says were multiple overlapping layers of security lapses, from the individuals manning the Logan airport checkpoints, to United's lack of compliance with federal security rules.

United has said it implemented all the mandated government requirements for security and could not be held responsible.

"The tragic events of 9/11 impacted all of us, and we are pleased to resolve this case," a spokeswoman for United said.

Remains of WWII servicemen to be buried

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Nine servicemen who died when their bomber was shot down over the Pacific during World War II have been identified, and their remains will be buried in a single casket at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors.

The Pentagon says the men took off in their B-17E Flying Fortress named "Naughty But Nice" in June 1943 from an airfield in Papua New Guinea. The plane was damaged by anti-aircraft fire and then shot down by Japanese fighter aircraft.

Army Air Forces 1st Lt. William J. Sarsfield of Philadelphia; 2nd Lt. Charles E. Trimingham of Salinas, California; Tech. Sgt. Robert L. Christopherson of Blue Earth, Minnesota; and Tech. Sgt. Leonard A. Gionet of Shirley, Massachusetts, will be buried as a group in a single casket Wednesday at Arlington.

Also in the casket will be the remains of previously identified crew members 2nd Lt. Herman H. Knott, 2nd Lt. Francis G. Peattie, Staff Sgt. Henry Garcia, Staff Sgt. Robert E. Griebel and Staff Sgt. Pace P. Payne. They were buried individually in 1985. A 10th man, the navigator and only survivor of the crash, 2nd Lt. Jose L. Holguin, was held as a prisoner of war until his release in September 1945.

Remains were recovered in 1949 on New Britain Island but couldn't be identified at the time. The remains were buried as unknown at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu.

In the early 1980s, Holguin returned to the area and located the crash site. In 1985, remains were exhumed and identified as Knott, Payne, Garcia, Peattie and Griebel. A fragment of the aircraft's nose art was recovered and is on display at a museum in Papua New Guinea.

In 2001, a team excavated the site and found additional human remains and related equipment.

The Defense Department said scientists used dental comparisons and DNA matching techniques to identify the remains.

At the end of the war, the U.S. government was unable to recover and identify approximately 79,000 Americans, the Defense Department said. Now, more than 73,000 are unaccounted for from the conflict.

Ice Cream Franchising Information ? Rebase Article Directory

Everyone loves ice cream. Ask anyone what type of ice cream they like best and you will listen to a lot of interesting answers and some great stories too. For longer than anyone alive can remember People in America have been eating this simple treat through good times and bad. During rich times and poor times people will look for ways to find great tasting ice cream. While driving by any ice cream shop you will notice that there are more folks wanting ice cream than there are franchises. When there is a demand for a product at this level it does not take a rocket scientist to figure out that owning an icecream franchise can be the best decision you will ever make.

Around the turn of the 20th century the ice cream soda was a favorite with teenagers. In some communities the fun snack was considered to be sinful and in a few places it was even prohibited on the Sabbath. Once cheap refrigerators grew to be standard in businesses in the second part, ice cream started to spread all around the world. Ice cream took off even more when the Baskin Robbins franchise introduced ice cream to the world. Enourmous growth was again experienced in the frozen treat market because the amount of air was upped and this made the first soft ice cream, forever changing the way the dessert was enjoyed. After the rise of soft ice cream everthing was in place for the ice cream franchise explosion.

One of the very first frozen treat franchising opportunities was the Carvel franchise. Tom Carvel at first sold ice cream from a broken down truck in the late 1920s and in the late 1940s created the first retail fun food ice cream store franchise in the U.S.,. This only started the craze and the ice cream franchise industry kept going long after Carvel had started. As a matter of fact, it has grown to be one of the most popular franchise opportunity industries in the mass collection of franchises.

Even though this can be fun there are some things to consider when investing in a franchise or starting a business. A common mistake a lot of investors make is to get frantic and to rush. You must know a lot about the market you would like to own and then it is very important that you follow the necessary steps to business ownership. For any business, whether its an ice cream franchise opportunity, a franchise restaurant, a oil change business, or any other type of business franchise it will require extreme dedication and many hours to be successful.

Several things come to mind when the time comes to invest in a franchise, but one thing that can?t be overlooked when buying an ice cream franchise is the marketplace where you are going to start your business. If you study the industry you will see that some business models like restaurant franchises are always busy in all places, but a few franchises can do better at different times of the year. Of course, this does not mean that ice cream franchise opportunities dont do well all year round in some climates, but these franchises might not make as much money in friged places up north but in the southern states they may never experience a lull in business. One option for owners in cold climates is to open their ice cream shop franchise in spots like malls where people are protected from bad weather so the patrons can enjoy the frosty treat all winter.

Possessing an ice cream franchise is a fun business where you can make lots of money. The United States eats way more ice cream than any other country in the world with most people eating their body weights of this simple treat and other fun frozen dairy foods per year. Around 98 percent of American households buy ice cream, and if you consider all of that it?s no task to see the demand for quality ice cream. Go ahead and buy a franchise that is very profitable while also creating pleasure in your area then buying and running an ice cream business might be a life changer for you as an investor.
