Nobody Chosen on the Tennessee Titans for the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl: Local Fan?s Take (Yahoo! Contributor Network)

The Tennessee Titans have it rough.

The Titans had to play the entire 2011-12 regular season without any primetime games on NBC, ESPN or the NFL Network. Yet, the Jacksonville Jaguars (whom hardly anybody outside of Northern Florida cares about, maybe Los Angeles?) were rewarded with two Monday Night Football home games and a Thursday Night game.

So the 2012 NFL Pro Bowl was supposed to be an opportunity for some of the Titans' best players to gain some national exposure. Unfortunately, nobody wants to see any of the Titans' best players. That, or they just haven't seen them play this season.

I'm not surprised. This franchise doesn't get much publicity outside of Middle Tennessee. Chris Johnson may be the only player who exudes a great deal of star power and interest from football fans in other markets. Jared Cook might become that player if offensive coordinator Chris Palmer starts incorporating him into the offense more often.

I have a friend who is a rather loyal football follower. Back in August, I asked him if he could name five players on the Titans' roster. Outside of Matt Hasselbeck and Johnson, he couldn't do more than "That receiver who's always getting busted for weed" and "that guy who tried to rob Andre Johnson on the football field." He did know who Michael Griffin was once I explained to him that he played his college football at the University of Texas.

So were there any Titans who were snubbed? I think there were two players who were borderline choices. Cortland Finnegan and Rob Bironas may have been selected had they played in bigger markets.

Finnegan has played very well this season. The problem is that it doesn't really show up in the stats. I'm not sure that he'd get selected even if he deserved it since he seems to be one of the NFL's most disliked players after his on-field behavior for the past few seasons. He's not a bad guy though: he was chosen as the Titans' Walter Payton Man of the Year for a second consecutive year in 2011.

Bironas had another fantastic season. He's 26-of-29 on the season and he's converted six of seven field goals from 50+ yards. His only miss from beyond 50 yards was a 66-yard attempt against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the regular-season opener. Sebastian Janikowski received the nod over Bironas after converting on 27-of-31 field goals. Janikowski converted on his 63-yard attempt against the Denver Broncos in the regular-season opener.

With young players like Jake Locker, Karl Klug and Colin McCarthy? This trend will hopefully expire sooner than later.

Joshua Huffman graduated from Middle Tennessee State University as a marketing major in 2009. He's been a Middle Tennessee resident from 1986-1988 and 2001-present. He lived in the Upper Peninsula and Northern Wisconsin from 1988-2001 and for approximately eight months in 2009-2010 while completing a 20-game volunteer position with the USHL's Green Bay Gamblers. His favorite sports organizations include the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Cubs, and Nashville Predators. He also follows the Tennessee Titans, his favorite AFC team.

Central Illinois clerks grant civil-union licenses

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. -- County clerks in central Illinois say they've issued civil union licenses since state law changed without any fanfare.

The (Springfield) State Journal-Register reports (http://bit.ly/uB1862) that all but one county in the Springfield area has issued a license. Illinois began allowing civil unions for same-sex couples on June 1.

Sangamon County has certified 106 civil unions so far in the last six months. That's compared to 728 marriage licenses over the same time.

County Clerk Joe Aiello says his office had lots of applicants the first week the law went into effect, but demand has since tapered off.

Equality Illinois says 90 of the state's 102 counties have granted more than 3,700 civil union licenses.

Pandigital SuperNova with Wi-Fi 8" Touchscreen Tablet PC Featuring Android 2.3 Operating System 4.6 5 3 5

Regretting Purchase When I saw the price of the Pandigital SuperNova 8", it was really hard to pass up. It seemed at the time and description that it was just what I was looking for. It wasn't. First of all, the casing is made of plastic, as well as the touch screen, this gives it a real cheap feel. The buttons, although well secured, feel like they could fall out at any minute. Performance is slow, and on some programs tends to hang. Doesn't come with many apps, and market androids apps are not compatible, there is a site that offers, but they are terrible. It can't play Netflix, many YouTube videos, but seems to be ok on music. There is more, but I'll stop there, it's a value, just not a good one. I should have just saved my money and purchased an I Pad or Kindle Fire. 12/17/2011

Love it It is not an ipad but it works fine for me. I purchased for my 5yr for christmas but i can't put it down. It is fast and faster when you upgrade the software. You can download the getjar app to find plenty of free apps and you could even download apps from amazon. It plays youtube fine for me and it does everything it says it will do. It is very responsive to the touch and downloading is fast depending on your internet service provider. I would buy another one over an ipad any day 12/19/2011

I just got this yesterday and I Love This Device. There are some amazing apps from angry birds to ESPN. I also like that with an SD Card You Can Expand Your Space To 32gb. Amazing Product and a Great Price. I would Recommend this to Everyone I Know 12/22/2011

Obama's recess dilemma (The Week)

New York ? The president may be tempted to make several appointments while Congress is on holiday, but doing so poses major political risks

Normally, a recess means that work gets put on hold. A holiday means a break from normal activity, even in Washington D.C. But as with most other quaint notions of normality, recesses and holidays in the beltway take on a partisan significance, especially when Republicans and Democrats believe they have an opportunity to score political points.

At the heart of this particular holiday rancor is Article II, Section II of the U.S. Constitution, which reads, "The President shall have Power to fill up all Vacancies that may happen during the Recess of the Senate, by granting Commissions which shall expire at the End of their next Session." The original intent of this clause was to provide the president a way to fill sudden openings in the executive and judicial branch at a time in history when calling Congress into session immediately was impossible, given the transportation and communication limitations of the era. This rule prevented government from becoming paralyzed in the absence of the Senate, and was expected to be used only in pressing circumstances.

SEE MORE: The brainless use of pop psychology to diss Obama

?

Barack Obama has not exactly been a shrinking violet when it comes to recess appointments.

Of course, any power granted to an office without restriction will eventually get used and even abused. That's true no matter which party holds the presidency. Recess appointments have always been controversial, and that has become especially true in the last few decades. Thurgood Marshall was put on the 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals through a recess appointment by John F. Kennedy, after southern Democrats threatened to block Marshall's confirmation. Bill Clinton's recess appointment of Bill Lan Lee for assistant Attorney General for civil rights avoided a Senate rejection over Lee's support of affirmative action. George W. Bush had to use a recess appointment to get John Bolton installed as ambassador to the U.N. when Democrats opposed to Bush's foreign policy in general, and Bolton's hostility towards the U.N. specifically, threatened to reject him. Bush also used his recess appointment power to install two appellate judges, Charles Pickering at the 5th Circuit and William Pryor at the 11th Circuit, when Democrats blocked votes on nearly all of his appellate appointments.

SEE MORE: President Obama's rising approval rating: 4 theories

?

Barack Obama has not exactly been a shrinking violet when it comes to recess appointments. Last year, Obama installed James Cole as deputy Attorney General, despite concerns in the Senate over his performance as independent monitor of AIG from 2005 through 2009, a period in which taxpayers had to bail out the insurance giant to keep it from destroying the American financial sector. Obama also gave a recess appointment to Donald Berwick to run Medicare and Medicaid, even though Democrats had 59 seats in the Senate and Berwick hadn't bothered to complete his initial questionnaire for his Senate confirmation process. That was controversial enough to provoke fellow Democrat Max Baucus into publicly criticizing Obama.

Another recess has now arrived, and with it, the opportunity to bypass a more closely-held Democratic Senate. It may not be a question of if Obama will use his recess power, but when ? and how often. Obama has a fight brewing over the National Labor Relations Board and its attempt to impose new union-friendly policies. The term of NLRB member Craig Becker, one of Obama's previous recess appointments to the NLRB, and one that caused a great deal of anger in the business community, has expired. Republicans in the Senate have held up two other appointments over the new regulations, which means that the NLRB board might not have a quorum. Unless Obama can get the Senate to act quickly to approve one or more of his nominees, the NLRB will not be able to do anything at all.

SEE MORE: Did Obama really call Americans 'lazy'?

?

There would be considerable political risk in the decision to use a recess appointment in this case. Obama's union allies want recess appointments that will allow the NLRB to promulgate those new, union-friendly regulations, and Obama needs unions to help organize the ground game for his re-election effort. However, the business community that Obama has tried to court all year wants the NLRB's regulatory adventurism curtailed, and will see a recess appointment as a signal that Obama wants to push the board further along its current anti-business trajectory. Obama risks losing important contributors, and worse, pushing them into the arms of the GOP.

SEE MORE: The many failures of Obama's Teddy Roosevelt speech

?

Obama has other opportunities for recess appointments as well. Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) has put holds on two FCC nominations in an attempt to force FCC chair Julius Genachowski to disclose communications between the agency, the White House, and LightSquared, a politically-connected firm that got a controversial waiver from Team Obama. Bypassing the Senate would cut Grassley out of the equation, but it would also contribute to the perception that Obama has something to hide on LightSquared.

Richard Cordray might be a candidate for a recess appointment. Republicans in the Senate blocked his confirmation a couple of weeks ago in a dispute over the structure of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Earlier this year, Obama had to withdraw the name of his first nominee to run the CFPB, Elizabeth Warren, and the rejection of Cordray undoubtedly rankled the White House, which sees the fight over the CFPB as old news and the block on Cordray as illegitimate. ?

SEE MORE: The 'creepy' Barack Obama mannequin

?

With the unlimited power to make recess appointments, why would Obama hesitate? For one, Obama needs to move legislation next year. Bypassing the Senate creates more hostility on Capitol Hill, even with members of one's own party, as the Berwick appointment proved. Voters might see it as a demonstration of leadership in response to an obstructionist Senate ? perhaps more so with Cordray than with others ? but they could also see it as executive arrogance, or even corruption.

Anticipating the temptation that all of these cases pose, as well as a few open judicial slots, Republicans forced Harry Reid to allow pro forma Senate sessions every three or four days for the five weeks of this current recess. The strategy is designed to argue that the Senate hasn't gone into recess at all, or at least not significantly enough to justify a recess appointment. A president hasn't made a recess appointment in the last 20 years during a period in which less than 10 days have passed between Senate sessions, say Republicans, and they believe this will keep Obama on the sidelines over the holidays. However, that relies heavily on tradition, not the law; the Constitution doesn't define the requisite length of a recess for the purpose of presidential appointments. Teddy Roosevelt made several recess appointments when the Senate went dark for just a day ? and Obama has evoked TR more than once over the last few weeks. Perhaps the president really will start swinging that big stick soon.

Man in custody after SC woman 'brutally murdered' with baseball bat

CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, SC (WBTV) -?A?woman was killed after being kidnapped and sexually assaulted in the Jefferson area of Chesterfield County on Monday, according to Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews.

Matthews said a suspect in the case later led Chesterfield deputies to the body of a woman in her 30s in the Mount Pisgah area of Kershaw County.? Matthews said the woman, identified as Beverly Hope Melton, had been "brutally murdered" with a baseball bat.

? Nickolas Jermaine Miller, 23, has been charged in the death of Melton who authorities say was abducted from a Chesterfield County store and beaten to death in a random attack.

Sheriff Matthews says a woman in her early 30s was abducted after leaving a convenience store Monday afternoon.

Authorities say Melton told her grandmother -- who lives just 2 miles away -- that she was being followed by Miller and that she was afraid of him. That was the last time anyone spoke to Melton.

Matthews says Melton was assaulted and driven to Kershaw County, where the killing happened.

After Kershaw County deputies were alerted of the possible abduction, Chesterfield?County deputies found Melton's car in a ditch in the reverse gear with Melton's purse still inside on along Angelus Road in Jefferson.

Matthews says surveillance footage?shows Melton at a convenience store earlier in the day as she was being?harassed by?Miller. That footage also helped to provide a description of Miller and the car he was driving.

Chesterfield County deputies later stopped Miller and took him?in for questioning.?During?questioning, Miller admitted to kidnapping, sexually assaulting and killing Melton.

After the admission, Miller took deputies to Melton's body.

Local authorities borrowed a SLED helicopter using infrared radar, were able to locate Melton's body in a field behind two abandoned turkey barns.

It was subsequently? determined that the homicide had taken place off of Sandy Grove Rd. in the Mt. Pisgah area of Kershaw County, Matthews said.

?"This was a horribly brutal and senseless crime. One of the worst I have ever seen. To our knowledge Ms. Melton did not know her killer," said Sheriff Matthews.

"Since the actual homicide took place in Kershaw County, the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office will take over the homicide investigation. I must give credit where it is due. Chesterfield authorities jumped on this case with a vengeance. They are the ones who solved this crime."

Miller was being held Tuesday on a murder charge. He is currently charged with kidnapping and assault in Chesterfield County.

No bond has been set. Because this is a capital offense, bond will be set by a circuit court judge at a later time.

Leafs coach Ron Wilson gets contract extension

? Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson has gotten his Christmas wish.

Two days after hinting on Twitter of his desire for a new contract, Wilson says the team has given him an extension.

"'He came! He came!' Remember saying that as a little kid? Well he did: I got a new Red Ryder BB gun and a contract extension!" Wilson tweeted Sunday morning.

The team did not immediately respond to an email seeking confirmation. Wilson tweeted Friday that what he wanted for Christmas was a new contract from general manager Brian Burke.

"This Xmas could be better if Santa stuffs a certain piece of paper in my stocking. whatcouldthatbe," Wilson posted on his Twitter account.

The 56-year-old Wilson is in the final season of a four-year contract. The Leafs are sixth in the Eastern Conference with 40 points. Toronto has not made the playoffs in three previously seasons under Wilson, who is 119-120-42 with the Leafs.

Wilson, a defenseman as a player, was selected by the Leafs in the 1975 draft. He has a 637-546-101-88 coaching record with Anaheim, Washington, San Jose and Toronto. He is 47-48 in the playoffs.

Colleges and suicide threats: when to call home? (AP)

The email that arrived at Virginia Tech's health center in November 2007 was detailed and unmistakably ominous. It concerned a Tech senior named Daniel Kim and came from an acquaintance at another college.

"Daniel has been acting very suicidal recently, purchasing a $200 pistol, and claiming he'll go through with it," the email read, adding details of a reported previous suicide attempt with pills. "This is not a joke."

By the time Virginia Tech told Daniel's father, William Kim, about that email, it was too late.

A few weeks after it was sent to the school, he spoke with his son for the last time, Daniel indicating all was well and after final exams he'd be home for the holidays.

A few days after that, parked in his car outside a Target store near campus, Daniel fatally shot himself in the head.

"If I'd known, I could have taken him to doctors, get him on medication, make him normal again," William Kim, who owns a Washington, D.C., convenience store, said in a recent telephone interview, grief still echoing in his voice four years after the fact.

Virginia Tech's actions were all the more confounding coming just months after the murder-suicide rampage on the same campus by another student, Seung Hui Cho, which had supposedly prompted campuses nationwide to rethink their previous emphasis on confidentiality in treating troubled students.

"Who is going to take better care of him than his parents?" Kim said. "I never had the chance to do anything for him. That's a terrible feeling."

In an agreement finalized by a judge last month in a multimillion-dollar lawsuit brought by the family, the Kims settled with Virginia Tech for $250,000, plus an endowed scholarship in Daniel's name. But William Kim also insisted that the agreement include language requiring Virginia Tech to notify parents of a potentially suicidal student unless it documents a reason not to do so.

The university, which admits no fault, maintains the language reflects policies already in place there under a 2008 state law, and wouldn't have made a difference for Daniel Kim anyway. It continues to insist that, after sending local police to check on the student, and despite the detailed email, it had no reason to believe he was actively suicidal and thus didn't need to notify his family.

But the family's attorney, Gary Mims, insists the settlement goes further than the state law, which applies only to students treated by university mental health services. Now, he says, Virginia Tech must at least consider notifying parents if it receives an indication from any source a student may be suicidal. Several experts described it as among the strongest such policies in the country.

The issue of when colleges should notify parents their adult children may be suicidal remains fraught with legal, medical and ethical dilemmas. College policies, state laws and professional codes of conduct vary widely ? and occasionally conflict.

Some mental health professionals call the Virginia Tech settlement the latest step in a trend they welcome: Threats to safety increasingly take precedence over preserving confidentiality. They emphasize that in many cases, involving parents is not only right, but helpful.

"There's some good evidence if someone is really sick, that involving family in their treatment planning, the medication, helping them stay on track, are really good things to do," said Greg Eells, director of counseling and psychological services at Cornell University in New York, which has changed several policies to make notifying parents more common. "I think the (Virginia Tech settlement) is kind of affirming that."

But many remain wary of top-down pressure on counselors to notify parents as the default option, even if such policies are well-intentioned and allow exceptions. Many students have just passing thoughts of suicide. Also, relationships with parents may be part of the problem. Involving them too readily might discourage some people from getting help, or complicate treatment once they do.

"The less flexibility we have, it actually compromises care," said Mary-Jeanne Raleigh, director of counseling services at St. Mary's College in Maryland and president of ACCA, the American College Counseling Association. Overly rigid policies mean, she said, "I can't review what is best for the individual standing in front of me because the law is saying you have to x, y and z."

Suicide is the second leading cause of death for college students, behind automobile accidents. A 2010 survey of counseling center directors found at least 133 college students had taken their lives in the previous year. The better indicator is probably the rate, estimated at about 6 to 7.5 per 100,000 ? though that's only about half the suicide rate for similarly aged people not in college.

But while the research highlights the danger, it also sheds light on why these are tough calls for colleges. Warning signs aren't always as black and white as they were at Virginia Tech. A milder form of suicidal ideation ? fleeting hopelessness or thoughts about death _is common among college-age students.

A 2009 survey of 26,000 students at 70 colleges found that roughly half reported having had at least occasional suicidal thoughts. But more than half of those said such thoughts lasted a day or less. Roughly 6 percent of undergraduates reported they had "seriously considered attempting suicide" in the last 12 months. Colleges must determine who's most at risk ? typically those who have made detailed plans and acquired means such as a weapon or pills.

"Someone who's seeking help but says, `I have to admit I have these thoughts five or six times a day and they're kind of scary' ? that's someone I wouldn't necessarily feel compelled to call the parents right away," Raleigh said. "That's very different from the person I get a call from at 3 o'clock on a Saturday morning who's been drinking and has immediate plans to kill themselves."

The 2010 survey of counseling directors found that when a client was considered a "suicidal risk" but didn't meet the state-law criteria for involuntary hospitalization, 41 percent wouldn't notify anyone else without a signed release from the student. Only 13 percent said they would notify family; 22 percent said they would notify a superior, and 19 percent said it would depend on the situation.

Why the hesitation to involve family? The data also show why colleges worry so much about any action that might discourage troubled students from seeking help: 80 percent of students who commit suicide, like Kim, never participated in campus counseling services.

"I'm in favor of notifying parents," said Carolyn Wolf, a mental health lawyer who advises college officials. "These are kids who are 18, 19, 20 years old, they're legally adults, but I don't think they're developmentally adults at that point. Parents are much more involved in kids' lives these days for a longer period of time." Still, she said, "you need to give some amount of flexibility to those people who are in the trenches."

Wolf advises parents to remember that FERPA, the federal education privacy law, has clear exceptions for risks to health and safety, as do state laws. HIPPA, the federal medical privacy law, generally doesn't apply to colleges. And while counselors and psychiatrists may be unable to discuss a student they are treating, those rules don't apply to anyone else on campus; faculty and administrators can call home about behavioral issues.

And, Wolf points out, nothing forbids counselors from listening.

Parents "can call a counseling center and say, `I think this meets one of the (confidentiality) exceptions, but even if you can't tell me things, you need to listen to me give you history, give you information,'" Wolf said.

William Kim's lawsuit against Virginia Tech contends the school broke its own protocol, which called for any student who had made even a gesture about suicide to see a psychologist on call immediately. Instead, officials discussed the email the morning they received it, and dispatched a local police officer to Kim's off-campus residence.

The officer reported Kim "appeared to be OK" and that Kim said he didn't know the student who had sent the email. That student appeared to know Kim through online gaming. The university also checked to see if Kim had purchased a gun. Apparently he had not, but did so a few weeks later.

Confidentiality laws would not have prevented Virginia Tech from contacting Kim's parents because he was not a patient of the university counseling center. But university officials decided not to reach out. Having received no other unsolicited indications from family, acquaintances or teachers that Kim might be suicidal, they concluded he was not a danger.

Ed Spencer, Virginia Tech's vice president for student affairs, acknowledged that the university has wide latitude to contact family if a student is suicidal, and said it would do so if it made that determination.

But, he said in a telephone interview, Daniel Kim "was never found to be suicidal by anyone here at Virginia Tech or by the Blacksburg police."

Regardless of the detailed plans reported in the email, altogether "there was nothing that added up that he was at all suicidal," Spencer said. He added experts the university consulted backed up that view and "were surprised we went the extra mile" of checking on the gun.

But Mark Mills, a Columbia University psychiatrist retained by Kim's attorneys, found the email alone represented clear evidence of a "psychiatric emergency" and that it was "irresponsible and reckless" that Virginia Tech failed to take further action to see if Daniel needed help.

When William Kim asked university officials why they hadn't told him about the email, he says they told him it was "unnecessary."

Kim responded: "It was unnecessary? My son's life was in danger, and you didn't think it was necessary?"

"They didn't call his teachers, other students, they didn't call me," said Kim, who emphasized he was not angry at Virginia Tech as a whole. "Nothing was done whatsoever to save him."

Daniel Kim was a happy kid, said his father, who only later learned his son had agonized about his perceived resemblance to Cho and experienced anti-Korean slurs after the shootings on campus the April before he took his own life.

Only later did William Kim learn his son had secluded himself for two weeks in his dorm ? the same building where Cho killed his first two victims.

"When somebody's life is in danger, all the privacy, that should go out the window," he said. "No matter how bad your relationship with your parents, when something like that happens you want to know."

He added: "He was suffering at that school. We had no idea.""

Brees draws confidence from coach, Saints

? Ever since Drew Brees arrived in the Big Easy, he?s made playing quarterback in the NFL look easy.

Brees has 27,698 passing yards since arriving in New Orleans in 2006, more than any other NFL quarterback during that span.

Before that, though, he had never thrown for as many as 4,000 yards in a season, and spent much of his first five years in the NFL looking over his shoulder in San Diego.

?We had experienced success in San Diego in my last two years there, but I just never got the feeling that everybody there was all in with me,? Brees said last week as he prepared for tonight?s meeting with Atlanta.

Brees now believes he needed what Matt Ryan has had since being drafted by the Falcons in 2008 ? the full and unwavering support of not just his head coach, but the entire organization.

Brees found that in New Orleans, which in the months after Hurricane Katrina needed someone like him ? someone with something to prove ? as much as he needed a team that believed he could be the cornerstone of its success.

?It was nice to ? walk into an organization where I just got the feeling like everybody believed in me,? Brees said. ?Sometimes that?s all you need. All you need is somebody to believe in you and then, obviously, my mindset was I?m not going to let these guys down. They have a lot invested in me, so I want to prove them right.?

    He?s certainly done that.

Brees has thrown for no fewer than 4,388 yards in a single season with New Orleans. In 2008, he threatened Dan Marino?s 1984 single-season passing yards record of 5,084, finishing with 5,069. In 2009, Brees set an NFL record for single-season completion percentage with 70.6 while leading the Saints to their first Super Bowl, in which Brees was selected MVP.

This season, Brees is completing 71.5 percent of his passes, threatening his own record, and with two games left is only 305 passing yards away from breaking Marino?s mark.

Although Ryan is not quite operating on Brees? level, he has done just what Atlanta needed lately to keep New Orleans from running away with the NFC South.

Ryan passed for 320 yards in a win at Carolina two weeks ago. In a lopsided victory over Jacksonville, he completed 73 percent of his passes (19 of 26) for 224 yards.

If the Falcons pull out a win, they?ll clinch a wild card and remain in the hunt to defend their NFC South title. The Saints would wrap up their second division crown in three seasons if they win.

Oddsmakers have made the Saints 7-point favorites, which is understandable, given that Brees is in the midst of one of the greatest seasons an NFL quarterback has ever had.

In reflecting on his remarkable run in New Orleans, Brees was quick to give much credit to coach Sean Payton.

?He brought out a confidence in me that I didn?t have before,? Brees said of Payton. ?I?ve always been a really confident guy, but I think there were certain things that might not have ever come out unless I was with him.

?Obviously this (offensive) system allows us to do some pretty cool stuff,? Brees continued. ?We?ve got a lot of great skill position players that you just get the ball in their hands, they can do something special with it. And an offensive line that has been one of the most consistent in the league, I believe, over the past six years, even though there have been some different faces.?

TURKEY ? EUROPEAN UNION Tensions between Ankara and Paris over the Armenian question

Istanbul ? Franco-Turkish relations have never been easy under President Nicolas Sarkozy. This time, the issue is not the legitimacy of Turkey?s place in Europe, but rather the genocide perpetrated by the Ottoman Empire in 1915 against the Armenians, an action never acknowledged by the secularist state founded by Kemal Ataturk or by today?s neo-Ottomanist government under Erdogan.

The spark that set off the controversy is a bill before the French National Assembly that would criminalise denying the Armenian holocaust with up to a year in prison and a fine of 45,000 Euros. France had already recognised the Armenian genocide in 2001.

In his statements, Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan was dour and bombastic, accusing France of being discriminatory, racist and xenophobic. Angry, the prime minister said that France?s ?step will open heavy wounds that will be difficult to heal?. Instead, the French should look at their own genocides in Algeria and Rwanda.

Before the bill was adopted, thousands of Turks gathered in front of the French parliament to protest. As a first response, Erdogan recalled the Turkish ambassador in Paris for consultations. He also suspended military cooperation with France, cancelled military agreements with Paris, froze bilateral deals and suspended political and economic contacts between the two countries.

Measured and conventional, French Foreign Minister Alain Jupp? urged Ankara to remain calm and not overreact. ?We have lots of things to work on together,? he said. The draft bill is expected to be go before the French Senate in February 2012 ahead of France?s presidential elections. Back in May of this year, the Senate had refused to criminalise genocide denial.

In Turkey, reactions reflect the clich?s usually associated with Erdogan and his ruling party, the AKP, closely following the official version of events, which backs Ottoman wartime policies and claims, whereby what happened in 1915 was sad but inevitable.

Various meetings and protests have also been organised by academic and commercial groups in Paris. In Turkey, the bill has allowed Erdogan to rally opposition parties, CHP and MJP, against France.

In Istanbul, the local Armenian community, especially people close to the newspaper Agos, which was edited by Hrant Dink until 2007 when he was murdered by Turkish ultra-nationalists, think that the French bill is a disaster for freedom of thought. For them, what counts is the ?human aspect of the genocide?.

The Armenian Patriarchate in Istanbul issued a press release, seen by many as deceitful and full of religious sentiments. Armenian journalist, Mark Yesayan thinks that it might have been made on the request of people in high places.

Turkey?s liberal and leftwing circles view the French law as a foolish move by Sarkozy to win the Armenian vote in the upcoming presidential elections.

They note that the attempt by the Turkish government to criticise France in the name of freedom of thought is inappropriate given Turkey?s own shortcomings in the matter. For them, Erdogan?s reference to Algerian and Rwanda cannot legitimise Turkey?s official position. Sadly, they believe the country lacks the maturity and courage, at an individual and collective level, to face its own history.

Turkish analysts believe the French Senate will approve the bill and that the European Court of Human Rights will uphold it because it does not violate European law.

Significantly, diplomatic circles in Brussels see a connection between statements by Turkey?s Minister for EU Affairs Egemen Ba???, a possible boycott of French products, and the recent crisis between the European Union and Great Britain.

Great Britain?s isolation in the European Union will hinder, not help Turkey?s EU membership bid. London has always been a keen supporter of Ankara.

GOP: Perry off Virginia ballot, Gingrich unclear (AP)

RICHMOND, Va. ? Texas Gov. Rick Perry has failed to make it onto Virginia's March 6 Republican presidential primary ballot, and the fate of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich hung in the balance, party officials said Friday.

Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul made the ballot, they said. But Republican Party of Virginia volunteers were still working late Friday to verify signatures Gingrich had submitted to the State Board of Election.

It's unclear how long it will take party officials to finish the process, Virginia GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said. He said it could be early Saturday before Gingrich's status was known.

Gingrich represented Georgia in Congress for two decades, but has lived in McLean, Va., an upscale Washington suburb, while he's worked in the private sector.

Failing to get on the ballot would be a major setback for Gingrich, who has tried to use his recent upsurge in popularity to make up for a late organizing start.

Shipley said the party was validating petitions the candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the state elections board. It began validating signatures Friday morning.

The 10,000 registered voters must also include 400 signatures from each of Virginia's 11 congressional districts.

Perry's campaign fell short of the 10,000 signatures, the state party said.

It was unclear if Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum or former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman submitted petitions to the state board.

Meanwhile, Virginia's Democrats said President Barack Obama's re-election campaign gathered enough signatures to get him on the state's primary ballot.

As he is the only candidate who qualified, the state's Board of Elections will likely cancel the scheduled primary election.

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
