The courtyard dining in Piatto is like something straight out of Italy. It?s open yet covered (good when sandstorms kick in). The sunlight is bountiful and the atmosphere is light and airy. The trickle of water from the fountain, the melodic beats of utensils, and the chatter from nearby tables create an ambiance that is not normally found in Riyadh?s restaurants.
Normally, a vision of mushroom and tomato-topped bruschetta with green salad on my table might put me off. But Piatto?s bruschetta and salad are visions of freshness; crisp, delicate, and topped with luscious cheese and tomatoes. Equaly good was the salmon pasta;? al dente farfalle swathed in a pinkish-orange sauce ? simply beautiful. As for my dining companions, they enjoyed their chicken drizzled with lemon and grilled salmon mains.
As for Dessert , this was fast and light. A visit to Piatto is not complete if you skip their Gelato, a creamy but very light Italian ice cream. Add creme brulee and tiramisu and you?ll have three pieces of heaven; all in one platter, a tidal wave of sweetness and decadence.
By the time we left Piatto after our hearty lunch, a line has already formed in the waiting area. At such times finding a parking space can be tricky, so arrive early. Although there are cushioned booths in the family section, I can?t recommend dining in the courtyard enough. Prices are a little higher than your usual Italian restaurant, but it?s definitely worth it. I?ll try their pizza next time!
