Did Mega-Drought Kill Ancient Aboriginal Culture?

A 1,500-year drought in Australia may have led to the demise of an ancient aboriginal culture, a new study suggests.

The results, published Nov. 28 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, show that geological traces of a mega-drought in the northwest Kimberley region of Western Australia coincide with a gap and transition in the region's rock art style. The finding suggests that the people who lived prior to the drought, called the Gwion, either left the region or dramatically altered their culture as a result of the drought, and a new culture called the Wanjinda eventually took its place.

"There is this significant gap in rock art. A possible reason for that is that the climate at that time changed so markedly that the artists who produced the Gwion Gwion art moved on from the Kimberley region," said study co-author Hamish McGowan, a climatologist at the University of Queensland in Australia.

But not everyone agrees with that interpretation. While the evidence for a drought is very convincing, archaeological sites show continuous occupation during that time, said Peter Veth, an archaeologist at the University of Western Australia who is an expert in the Kimberley's rock art and was not involved in the study.

"They reconfigure themselves on the land and often do portray things quite differently, but I don't see it as a different people," Veth told LiveScience.

Ancient inhabitants

Aboriginal cultures have inhabited Northwest Australia for the past roughly 45,000 years, McGowan said. But at least 17,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Era, a culture called the Gwion began depicting aspects of their life on the rocks in the region. The Gwion art depicted some extinct animals (such as a marsupial lion that went extinct during the last ice age) but also groups of slim figures in what look like ancient celebrations. [Image Gallery: Europe's Oldest Rock Art]

But between 5,000 and 7,000 years ago, traces of the Gwion rock art disappeared, and it wasn't until around 4,000 years ago when a new style of rock-art painting called the Wandjina, which depicts round faces with big eyes, emerged. It is still practiced today.

Pollen record

To understand why the rock art changed, McGowan and his colleagues analyzed sediments drilled from Black Springs, Australia. They found that around 6,300 years ago, the type of pollen started to change, suggesting a transition from a lush environment to one characterized by scrubby forests and open grasslands. The sediments also show an increase in dust, suggesting much drier conditions.

The results painted a picture of an ancient mega-drought that roughly coincided with the disappearance of Gwion art, McGowan said.

"The northwest of Australia can undergo very substantive natural changes in climate, which in the past have severely impacted Aboriginal society," he told LiveScience, adding the climate change and disappearance of Gwion art suggest these people left the region.

But while it's likely that the drought radically altered the local societies, the rock art from the area isn't dated well enough to make conclusions about the complete disappearance of the culture, Veth said.

What's more, archaeological evidence suggests the area was continuously occupied, he told LiveScience. For instance, archaeologists find very similar stone tools throughout the drought, Veth said.

"They have identified a very interesting climate episode and it does seem to correlate with this switch ? and that's the word I would use ? a switch in the way people are portraying art," he said.

Iran state TV says Syrian rebels free 48 Iranians

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's state-run Press TV reports that Syrian rebels have freed 48 Iranians amid reports that a rare prisoner swap is under way.

Turkey's state-run agency Anadolu Agency, quoting a Turkish Islamic aid organization that is reportedly coordinating the prisoner exchange, said Wednesday that the rebels will release the Iranians in return for 2,130 prisoners held by the Syrian government.

Comp plan details extreme sports site, community/rec center, indoor ...

When the new Comprehensive Plan for the City of Storm Lake debuts at a Jan. 9 public forum, it will include concepts designed to spur growth and recreation.

?We?re getting into the esoteric as well as the practical,? says City Manager Jim Patrick.

The plan will address the coming 20 years, with expectations that it will be updated every five years. The City is looking for public input before it finalizes the plan next spring.

Included in the 11-chapter document are mapped possibilities for a new indoor sports field, possibly even a dome, in an expansion of the Field of Dreams complex.

A Community Center is a prime focus of the plan. ?This is a very strong suggestion, it would be a great thing to have,? Patrick said. ?The plan does not set out an exact location. Renovating old South School remains a possibility, but so would building something new that would be more useable.?

The comp plan foresees a ?community/arts/cultural/recreation? multi-use center.

Several new parks are also suggested, including one to locate in the downtown area. A possible site could be the area of the current Sara Lee/Hillshire Brands feed mill, as the company is considering multiple possible locations to build a new mill, Patrick said. The proposal calls for a ring of townhouse/condo developments to face the park.

An ?East City Square? with parkland is proposed for the east part of town, and a new Seneca Park in the 10th-13th street areas.

The City has been considering possible uses for an old dredging spoil site, and the comp plan proposal suggests an extreme sports park for the site ? where ATVs, motocross motorcycles, BMX bikes, snowmobiles and cross-country skis could use trails.

An off-leash dog park is proposed for the areas behind the Storm Lake cemetery.

The comp plan proposes cross-town recreation trails to add to existing trails and a scheduled construction project adding a trail along North Lake Avenue.

The plan also details continued efforts to develop new housing, which has been identified as a pressing need in recent years, as population growth of about 10 percent a year has outstripped the available housing.

The proposed comp plan anticipates growth and development to the north and west edges of the City, with some potential for expansion to the south, Patrick says. A major focus would be to develop the Highway 7 corridor with natural resource areas, office space and retail stores. The King?s Pointe area is a key focus, where commerical development has yet to live up to expectations from the Project AWAYSIS planning seven years ago. The City is especially interested in bringing in restaurants and new stores to the area, Patrick said.

The plan?s vision includes changes to the traffic patterns and handling systems to slow vehicles down as they pass through Storm Lake, and increase options for pedestrians, runners and bikers. Capital improvement plans and continued replacement of aging infastructure are also addressed.

?This document is a lot of good reading ? basically it serves as a set of suggestions for where the City?s efforts should be focused in the years to come,? he added. ?The idea is that we need to pull the whole community together a little more, os that we can have everyone working side by side in the same direction. It?s going to take not just government, but all of us.?

The January 9 session at King?s Pointe is open to the public, and begins at 5:30 p.m.

U.S. Flu Season Activity Peaks -- for Now

The 2012-13 influenza season began a month early this time around. Reports of flu-like illnesses and confirmed flu cases so far indicate peak reporting in the third week of December. The most recent report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention covered the one-week period ending Dec. 29, with a substantial decrease in confirmed and reported influenza illnesses.

Status of Flu Illness in U.S. as of Dec. 29

Even though there were fewer people seeing health care providers for flu-like illnesses the week of Dec. 23 through Dec. 29, the CDC reported that the last week of December still saw reporting numbers above the baseline for the fourth consecutive week.

Twenty-nine states and New York City reported high levels of flu activity, an increase over 16 states reporting that level the week prior. Nine states reported moderate levels of influenza activity. Forty-one states reported widespread geographic flu activity.

Hospitalizations and Deaths Related to Influenza

The CDC reported that in the last full week of December, 2,257 laboratory-confirmed flu illnesses resulted in hospitalizations, a number that represented an increase in hospitalizations from the illness by 723 from the prior week. Translating those numbers to the overall population, 8.1 persons in every 100,000 were hospitalized as a result of influenza.

The CDC indicated that the proportion of deaths due to complications of the flu remained slightly below the epidemic threshold. Two pediatric deaths have resulted from the flu, both from influenza-B viruses.

Influenza-A has been the predominantly causative virus of the laboratory-confirmed illnesses.

Flu Vaccinations and Antiviral Medications

Dr. Joe Bresee, Chief of the Epidemiology and Prevention Branch of the CDC's Influenza Division, cautioned the nation in a statement made Friday that there is no way of knowing how severe the flu season will be, but that many people have already been ill or hospitalized due to the influenza viruses.

Bresee advised that anyone who has not received the flu vaccine should do so now and added that people with severe flu symptoms and those at high risk for complications from the flu should get treated immediately with influenza antiviral medications whether they have been vaccinated or not. Bresee added that health care providers do not have to wait on laboratory confirmation of the flu to prescribe the antiviral medications.

Who Is at High Risk for Complications from Influenza?

Individuals who are considered to be a high-risk from complications from the flu include children age 5 years and younger and particularly children younger than 2 years; adults age 65 and older; pregnant women; Native Americans and Eskimo Natives; people with conditions such as asthma and other chronic lung conditions; blood, liver or kidney disorders; conditions with weakened immune systems and more.

Bottom Line

Influenza is an illness that demands respect in that it can cause life-threatening complications. All age groups may be affected, from the newborn to baby boomers and their seniors. Preventive measures such as frequent hand washing, good nutrition, and regular physical activity should be followed in efforts to stave off illness.

Audi unveiled at CES drives itself, turns on via phone

LAS VEGAS - Forget valet parking. The car of the future can find a spot for you and then pick you up.

And the future has driven to CES 2013. Audi's Connect car not only drives and parks itself but the iPhone is its key.

"Imagine you are at a shopping center and you want the car to pick you up. That's exactly what it will do," Annie Lien, Audi Senior Engineer, told ABC News.

Click Here for Full Coverage: CES 2013

We witnessed it firsthand. At a demo at the Mandarin Oriental hotel in Las Vegas, Audi set up a working demonstration of the technology. Press the Pickup button on the Audi app, and you can set the time at which you want the parked car to come pick you up. Tap the button again and it will turn on the ignition and come get you. No one in the driver's seat.

How does it work? Audi has been developing its own self-driving technology, which it prefers to call piloted parking or driving. (It says it wants to stress that humans can take control at any time.) The car uses twelve ultrasound sensors to navigate and avoid obstacles. It parks itself with a combination of sensors in the car, the garage and roads.

The hope is that parking garages will have computers that communicate with the car, telling it where there is open space. The car is able to make turns on its own and knows how to maneuver around the garage with external laser sensors.

Click Here: CES 2013 in Pictures

The road to autonomous cars isn't a short one. Today Audi announced that it has become the first automaker granted a license to drive or operate autonomous cars in Nevada. Nevada passed a law last year making it legal to test self-driving cars in the state, and other companies, such as Google, have been granted licenses as well. Audi says it expects the technology it's working on to be commercially available in the next decade.

Until then, we'll continue to look for parking on our own.

Wall Street rises as earnings season begins

2 hrs.

Wall Street rose on Wednesday after Alcoa got the earnings season under way with better-than-expected revenue and an encouraging outlook for the year.?

Alcoa Inc said it expects global demand for aluminum will continue to grow in 2013, though the company kept a cautious tone as worries lingered over a looming U.S. budget confrontation. Shares of Alcoa, the largest aluminum producer in the United States, rose 0.5 percent to $9.18.?

Still, investors are wary about the outcome of the fourth-quarter earnings season. Profits were expected to beat the previous quarter's lackluster results, but analyst estimates were down sharply from where they were in October. Earnings were expected to grow by 2.7 percent, according to Thomson Reuters data.?

But the lowered expectations leave room for companies to surprise investors even if their results aren't particularly strong, analysts said.?

"Clearly no one is expecting a stellar earnings season. With the number of companies that lowered guidance over the last few weeks, I think there's some concern that we could see companies disappoint," said Kate Warne, investment strategist at Edward Jones in St. Louis.?

"However, based on the fact that many companies have lowered guidance, that means they've put the bar so low they could crawl over it, and I would expect what we'll see is some relief as earnings come in."?

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 67.00 points, or 0.50 percent, to 13,395.85. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index rose 5.50 points, or 0.38 percent, to 1,462.65. The Nasdaq Composite Index added 10.07 points, or 0.33 percent, to 3,101.88.?

Among other earnings, Constellation Brands , whose labels include Robert Mondavi and Ravenswood wines, rose 0.4 percent to $36.30 after it reported higher profit and raised its earnings forecast.?

Apollo Group Inc slid about 10 percent after it reported lower student sign-ups for the third straight quarter and cut its operating profit outlook for 2013. Apollo's shares were last at $18.83.?

Dish Network Corp late Tuesday announced a bid for Clearwire Corp that trumped Sprint Nextel Corp's $2.2 billion offer, setting the stage for a battle over the wireless service provider.?

Clearwire was up 7.5 percent at $3.14, while Sprint lost 2 percent to $5.85.?

Hard drive maker Seagate Technology rose 4.6 percent to $32.83 after it raised its second-quarter revenue forecast.?

Chinese protesters stage rare censorship demo

Kyodo News via AP

A protester holds aloft a banner calling for freedom of speech near the headquarters of Southern Weekly newspaper in Guangzhou, Guangdong province on Monday.

By NBC News staff and wire services

GUANGZHOU, China ? Scores of supporters of one of China's most liberal newspapers demonstrated outside its headquarters on Monday in a rare protest against censorship, backing an unusual strike by journalists against interference by the provincial propaganda chief.?

The protest in Guangzhou, capital of southern Guangdong province, came amid an escalating standoff between the government and the people over press freedom. It is also an early test of Communist Party Chief Xi Jinping's commitment to reform.?

Negotiations between journalists and officials, whom the protesters held responsible for replacing a New Year's letter to readers that called for a constitutional government with another piece lauding the party's achievements, continued into the night, a senior journalist who asked not to be named told NBC News.

Police allowed the demonstration outside the headquarters of the Southern Group, illustrating that the Guangdong government, led by new appointee and rising political star Hu Chunhua, wants to tread carefully to contain rising public anger over censorship.?

The protesters, most of them young, laid down small handwritten signs that said "freedom of expression is not a crime" and "Chinese people want freedom."

China Nobel winner Mo Yan likens censorship to airport security

Many clutched yellow chrysanthemums, symbolizing mourning the death of press freedom.?

"The Nanfang (Southern) Media Group is relatively willing to speak the truth in China, so we need to stand up for its courage and support it now," Ao Jiayang, a young NGO worker with bright orange dyed hair, told Reuters.?

AP

Security guards stand near protest banners as flowers are laid outside the headquarters of Southern Weekly newspaper in Guangzhou, Guangdong on Monday.

"We hope that through this we can fight for media freedom in China," Ao said. "Today's turnout reflects that more and more people in China have a civic consciousness."

The U.S. State Department on Monday weighed in on the popular agitation for freer speech in China.

"We believe that censorship of the media is incompatible with China?s aspirations to build a modern information-based economy and society," said spokeswoman Victoria Nuland, speaking?to reporters at the daily department briefing. "It is, of course, interesting that we now have Chinese who are strongly taking up their right for free speech, and we hope the government?s taking notice."

Could expand
Chen Ziming, a Beijing-based political analyst who spent years in prison for his involvement in the 1989 Tiananmen pro-democracy movement, said the protests could get worse if authorities ignore the protesters demands.

"I am concerned ? that the leaders concerned may not have the boldness and the capability to push for more reform," he told NBC News. "If the problem is not handled properly, there is the danger that it will expand and worsen."

The non-profit watchdog group Reporters without Borders ranked China at 174th out of 179 spots in its 2011-2012 press freedom index. The United States ranked 47th in the annual report,?six rungs above Hong Kong, a former British colony which is administered separately from China's mainland.

"China, which has more journalists, bloggers and cyber-dissidents in prison than any other country, stepped up its censorship and propaganda in 2011 and tightened its control of the Internet, particularly the blogosphere," the group said in a report about the rankings.

The attention paid to the protest domestically?highlights the unique position of Guangdong, China's wealthiest and most liberal province and the birthplace of the country's "reform and opening up" program. In a symbolic move, Xi chose to go to Guangdong on his first trip after being anointed party chief in November.

Mo Yan's Nobel win celebrated ?and panned ? in China

"That this is happening in Guangdong, a trendsetter?of China?s reform, is cause for worry," Bao Tong, the highest ranking party official sent to prison for sympathizing with the 1989 pro-democracy movement, told NBC News.

"If Guangdong regresses, then it will be a setback for the reform pioneered by Xi Zhongxun," he said, referring to the father of new Party chief Xi Jinping who was once Guangdong?s governor.

Revelations of vast fortune held by Chinese leader's family may hurt Communist Party image

Talking to NBC News by telephone from his Beijing home where he remains under virtual house arrest, Bao said China?s new leaders recently called for protecting the constitution and rule of law.

"What the journalists did was to support the call of the new leaders, and the leaders should be happy, not unhappy," he said.

Several open letters have circulated on the Internet calling for the Guangdong propaganda chief, Tuo Zhen, to step down, blaming him for muzzling the press.?

?

Photographs on microblogs showed banners that said "if the toxin of Tuo isn't removed ... Guangdong will be castrated."?

"Not since the time of reform and opening up and the founding of China has there been someone like Tuo Zhen," Yan Lieshan, a retired veteran editor at the Southern Weekly newspaper, told Reuters by telephone. "He's too arrogant. He has gone overboard and constantly violates regulations."?

Xiao Shu, a former prominent commentator at the Southern Weekly, said Tuo required that journalists submit topics for him to approve and that he yanked issues that he disliked.?

Dissident Chinese artist Ai Weiwei goes 'Gangnam Style'

"These details illustrate one problem: that he has established within the Guangdong media a system of prior censorship of the press," Xiao said, calling for Tuo's removal.?

Chinese Internet users already cope with extensive censorship, especially over politically sensitive topics like human rights and elite politics, and popular foreign sites Facebook, Twitter and Google-owned YouTube are blocked.?

China shut the website of a leading pro-reform magazine on Friday, apparently because it ran an article calling for political reform and constitutional government, sensitive topics for the party which brooks no dissent.

NBC News' Eric?Baculinao, Le Li, Kari Huus and Reuters contributed to this report.?

CSN: Why Bonds made this writer's ballot

It started with Barry Bonds.

He wasn?t listed first on my Hall of Fame ballot when it arrived in mid-December -- a plain sheet of paper folded tightly amid a thick amber envelope. The names were arranged alphabetically. But my eyes scanned past Craig Biggio, past Jeff Bagwell and onto Bonds.

This is where it had to begin.

Before I moved onto any other name, before I checked or bypassed any other box, I had to make a decision on Bonds that would render me equal parts judge, prosecutor, juror, journalist, statistician, fan and historian.

How I approached Bonds would affect how I approached the rest of the ballot, and every proceeding ballot that would be chock full of the greatest hitters and pitchers to emerge from baseball?s steroid era. Some were thought to be clean. Some were proven to be otherwise. Many more lay somewhere in between, in those wicked weeds of suspicion and innuendo.

It?s always been imprecise to compare players from different eras, who played in different ballparks, with different technology and against a talent pool that didn?t include anyone of color until just 66 years ago. It?s always been a challenge for someone like me, a journalist who writes for an ephemeral media, to fill out a ballot with such historic and long-term consequences.

But what happens when the statistics, the metronome of baseball, become so warped that they lose nearly all their meaning? Even if you know who took steroids and who didn?t, and precisely how much over an exact period of time, what does it all mean? In the end, who is a Hall of Famer and who isn?t?

It?s a simple, yet devilishly complicated question: Does Barry Bonds belong in Cooperstown?

I already knew which way I was leaning. Back in March, when I taped four episodes of Jeopardy! as a contestant, the coordinators warned me that during the interview segment, Alex Trebek would skip right past those other fluff anecdotes I provided and hit me with the hard stuff on the very first show. He meant to find out where I stood on the subject of steroids and the Hall of Fame.

Already a bundle of nerves, I tried to answer him honestly, and with a minimum of dodging. Yes, it will be very difficult for voting members of the Baseball Writers Association of America to decide this issue. Some may exclude players who likely wouldn?t have posted Hall of Fame numbers without artificial enhancement. Others may decide that any steroid use makes a player ineligible. As for me, I will not be a moralist with my vote. The best players belong, regardless.

If I had more time during the interview, I would have added this: Baseball is not golf. It is not a gentleman?s game, nor does it pretend to be. Baseball has a culture of cheating that goes back to its inception, of loading up the baseball and stealing signs and corking bats and yes, of drug use. All amphetamines became controlled substances by 1965. Players who took them did so illegally, just as steroid users did. Of course, amphetamines didn?t shred the record books in the same way. But just because the impact of amphetamine use was more minimal didn?t make the act of taking them any more right or wrong than steroid use.

Nobody should reward cheating, of course. It?s not the example we want to set for young, impressionable people. It goes against our social bargain. But we shouldn?t pretend it hasn?t been part of the game, either.

So, with some discomfort, this would be my stand: I would not exclude players who admitted to steroid use or were connected to them in a substantial way. But I would judge their statistics accordingly.

(Looking back, I should have responded in the form of a question.)

That established, we come back to Bonds.

You?ve heard all the arguments from the pro-Bonds crowd, including this one: He was a Hall of Famer before the time period when there is evidence to support he began using steroids. I do subscribe to that mode of thinking, to a large extent.

But I kept coming back to a season later in Bonds? career, and it wasn?t his 73-homer tour de force in 2001 or even his eight-homer, 45-at-bat postseason in 2002. It was 2004, the first season I covered the Giants beat. Go back and look at what Bonds did that season. It will never be seen again.

He had a .609 on-base percentage. He walked 232 times. He was intentionally walked 120 times. (Last season, the Cincinnati Reds led the majors with 54 intentional walks as a team. Mickey Mantle was intentionally walked 127 times in his entire career.)

So Bonds had the bat completely taken out of his hands in 24 percent of his plate appearances in 2004. He saw one pitch to hit, maybe, in a three-game series. I was there. I know.

And when he got that pitch, he was ready. There was no way to disrupt his timing or ice the kicker. He hit 45 home runs, drove in 101 runs and won the batting title with a .362 average. In perhaps the defining moment of the steroid era, he saw a 101 mph fastball from Eric Gagne. He pulled it foul.

Bonds was the most talented hitter I?ve ever seen. He was a savant. He predicted pitch after pitch from the dugout, leaving his teammates in amazement. Perhaps only Ted Williams had his combination of cunning, vision and confidence. Sadly for Bonds, he will never get credit for being one of the two or three most intelligent hitters in baseball history. He?ll be remembered for his brawn and not his brains, and the way he built those cartoonish muscles. That is the great shame of Barry Bonds. In trying to build his legacy, he destroyed it.

It doesn?t take away from his base talent, though ? and on his level, he is almost certainly without peer.

I cannot imagine any list of the game?s greatest players without Barry Bonds, just as I cannot imagine that list without Pete Rose. (That is a column for another day, though.)

In the end, I had to admit what so many opposing pitchers admitted to themselves over the years. Bonds was just too good. No matter what he did, or what he injected into his glutes or let dissolve on his tongue, or how many times he glared at the media or brushed off the opportunity to perform a small kindness, no matter how many teammates he alienated or people he burned, Bonds was one of the ultra-elite ? one of the all-time greatest players in baseball history.

Other than being petty or sanctimonious or both, I couldn?t think of any rationale for deciding that he didn?t belong in the Hall of Fame. So I made my first action. I checked Bonds? name.

Next, I checked the names of candidates that merited my vote a year earlier: Jeff Bagwell, Tim Raines, Edgar Martinez, Larry Walker.

Raines is the easiest for me. He was a more efficient base stealer than Rickey Henderson and got on base just as often as Tony Gwynn. Just look at what he did in 1987 (.330/.429/.526, 123 runs, 50 stolen bases out of 55 attempts) and then realize that he was cheated out of the first month of the season because the owners colluded to depress salaries and nobody signed him as a free agent. If not for Rickey, Raines might be considered the most accomplished leadoff hitter in baseball history. If anything, Raines should earn points, not demerits, for the way he handled his later issues with cocaine use, too.

Bagwell, by any statistical measure, ranks among the most productive first basemen in major league history. If Jim Rice made the Hall largely because of the fear he instilled in pitchers, then Bagwell is a cobra to Rice?s garter snake. With his wide stance, Bagwell almost seemed to hiss as he uncoiled and unleashed on pitches. Yes, he had huge and veiny forearms. Mike Piazza had terrible back acne. But I refuse to be a detective with my ballot. Some players got caught. Some didn?t. Some used steroids and we?d never suspect otherwise.? (Alex Sanchez, who hit all of six home runs in more than 1,600 plate appearances, was suspended for steroid use in 2005.) Some others who fit the ?roid profile might have been as clean as a meadow after a rain. Only they know for sure. I just know I cannot feel comfortable voting for one guy and not another because of suspicion, or because one player might have been smarter or luckier about where they sourced their stuff. (I also believe there is at least one current Hall of Famer who used steroids toward the end of his career, by the way, even if I cannot responsibly mention his name.) I believe I have to judge Bagwell and Piazza on their accomplishments and statistics, and those make them slam dunks for the Hall.

As for Larry Walker, sure, his home splits were ridiculous. But as Joe Posnanski pointed out, so were Rice?s splits. Walker, when healthy, did it all. He was a pure hitter and tremendous defender, and incidentally, he also hit the longest home run I?ve ever seen ? off Jesse Orosco at Coors Field. (Yes, that includes all the Bonds homers I saw over the years.) Walker is very borderline, but he passes the bar for me. He?s also an ambassador as the most accomplished Canadian in baseball history, and that means something.

Martinez was a DH, he didn?t get to 3,000 hits or those other benchmarks that we associate with the Hall and he wasn?t really good at anything other than hitting. But what a hitter he was. Bonds aside, he?s probably as good a pure hitter as the game has seen in the past two decades. He was a beloved figure and he had a major hand in saving baseball in the Pacific Northwest. Again, he?s no slam dunk. But he did enough for me.

I do not vote for Jack Morris, although I deeply respect his reputation as a big-game pitcher as well as his durability and longevity. He was the last of his breed ? the starting pitcher who exceeded 250 innings every single season and seldom walked off the mound before recording 24 outs. But he does not rank among the game?s immortals for me. Even if you take out his last two seasons, his 3.73 ERA is still too high. Also, I re-examine Dale Murphy, Alan Trammell, Don Mattingly and Lee Smith every year. They still fall short for me, and to avoid writing a book here, I?ll leave it at that.

As for the other first-time names on the ballot, I marked three in addition to Bonds: Piazza, Craig Biggio and Roger Clemens.

Piazza is the best offensive catcher in baseball history. You knew he was a Hall of Famer when he was just a few years into his career. He had that kind of presence. I was covering the Dodgers the night that Fox executives traded him to the Marlins, and it ranks as one of the strangest experiences of my career. The Dodgers held a press conference in the Stadium Club in the ninth inning of a game against Montreal, and GM Fred Claire began it by saying something to the effect of, ?I want to make it absolutely clear how this transpired: I was informed of the deal by Fox executives Chase Carey and Peter Chernin?? You knew ol? Fred wouldn?t be in his chair much longer. Anyway, the important thing is that Piazza was more than a franchise player. We knew that in 1998, and we know it now.

Biggio is one of the game?s most underrated players, as Jayson Stark has so thoroughly demonstrated. Yes, I had that moment when I considered not supporting a player who ?compiled? 3,000 hits. Then I looked at where Biggio ranked in runs scored (15th all time), and the names that surrounded him on that list. And I looked at where he ranked in doubles (fifth all time), and realized that everyone above him was left-handed or a switch hitter. That?s right ? nobody in baseball history has hit more career doubles from the right-handed batter?s box than Craig Biggio. And he played three valuable positions ? catcher, center field and second base ? equally well. He should be in, and on the first ballot.

That leaves us with one name to discuss, and for me, it was the hardest one to check. I don?t have much fondness for Clemens, who strikes me as baseball?s version of Lance Armstrong in the way he?s vigilantly confronted charges of drug use amid so much evidence to the contrary. It certainly does seem like the Rocket turned on the afterburners all of the sudden when he arrived in a Blue Jays uniform just as his career was about to fizzle, and then dominated for the next decade. Maybe the development of his splitter made all the difference. Maybe it was more. There certainly seemed to be something beyond competitiveness on the mound that night he threw Piazza?s splintered bat. But when you look at Clemens? overall career, he?s obviously one of the top 10 pitchers in baseball history.

I could have left him off my ballot, as I did for Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire and Rafael Palmeiro, in the belief that they wouldn?t have put up the numbers to be worthy of Hall of Fame consideration without using steroids. (Sosa hasn?t admitted to using steroids as McGwire did, nor was he suspended for a failed test as Palmeiro was. But he reportedly tested positive as part of survey testing in 2003, and he got caught with a corked bat, which counts for something.)

Ultimately, I decided that Clemens was almost certainly a Hall of Fame pitcher based solely on his time with the Red Sox. So in the interests of being consistent, I had to treat him the same way I treated Bonds.

And that is where this process ties me in knots. All voters want to establish some kind of standard and apply it consistently. But are we truly establishing a standard, or are we gerrymandering our own rationales to make our ballots fit some kind of defensible version of consistency? I?ve thought about it a lot. I still don?t have an answer.

Here is my other internal debate: What is the Hall of Fame, really? Some say it?s a museum, and no museum should ignore an entire era of history just because it?s unsightly or uncomfortable. Others say it?s a shrine and only players who were great and honorable should be rewarded with a place there. (Despite the character clause that appears with the voting instructions, you can count plenty of scoundrels and bigots who have plaques).

As for me, I?ve always felt the Hall of Fame is there to house the players who left an indelible impact on the game, whose deeds on the field inspired lasting memories among the fans who saw them and connected with them. Whether we are reporters or fans, we invest ourselves in these players. Some had richer careers than others.

After wrestling with my ballot for weeks, I am less sure than ever about what the Hall of Fame means and who belongs there ? and that makes me certain about one thing. I have to go to Cooperstown. I have to see and experience this place for the first time, to walk the halls and view the relics and study the faces of others as they soak in their surroundings.

Maybe then I?ll have a better idea of what the Hall of Fame truly means, and who truly belongs there.

And I need to go soon, because next year?s ballot will be an even bigger mess. That?s because I don?t expect any of my eight selections to get in, and with Tom Glavine, Greg Maddux and Frank Thomas all eligible next year, that 10-vote maximum is going to force me, and many other voters, to leave off players who otherwise would earn our support.

Maybe I?ll just ask Trebek to fill out my ballot next year.

Chuck Hagel Pushback: Groups Say He's Anti-Israel, Anti-Gay

The pushback against Chuck Hagel, President Obama's new nominee for secretary of Defense, has been swift and sustained.

Almost as soon as Hagel's name was floated on background as a likely nominee, Israel and gay-rights advocates sprang to criticize the former Republican senator and noted Iraq war critic. He voted against Iran sanctions, and the Republican Jewish Coalition aired a long list of grievances that reads like a point-by-point antithesis of what staunch Israel backers would look for in a Cabinet official: with his name missing from a series of lawmaker letters, Hagel was on the wrong side of issues from Hezbollah to Hamas to Iran's nuclear program, the RJC said.

And in 1998, Hagel made an anti-gay comment about ambassadorial nominee Jim Hormel, opposing him as "openly aggressively gay." Hagel apologized last month.

Now that Obama has announced Hagel as his pick despite all the backlash against him, that backlash has begun anew.

The Emergency Committee for Israel, the Bill-Kristol-founded Israel group that typically takes a hawkish line and airs campaign ads against Democrats, has posted a new website attacking Hagel - www.chuckhagel.com - urging readers to call their senators and oppose his nomination. The site hosts a trove of opposition research on Hagel's votes, plus the ad ECI already aired opposing Hagel on cable TV in the Washington, D.C., area last month.

The Anti-Defamation League, a group founded in 1913 to fight anti-Semitism, doesn't sound too excited. The group's president, Abraham Foxman, released a statement that began with the conciliatory note of respecting Obama's prerogative, but continued with criticism.

"I trust that the confirmation process will provide an opportunity for Senator Hagel to address concerns about his positions, which seem so out of sync with President Obama's clear commitment on issues like Iran sanctions, isolating Hamas and Hezbollah and the president's strong support for a deepening of U.S. Israel strategic cooperation," Foxman wrote. "I particularly hope Senator Hagel will clarify and explain his comments about the 'Jewish Lobby' that were hurtful to many in the Jewish Community."

Hagel's 1998 anti-gay comment hasn't faded, either.

The gay GOP group Lob Cabin Republicans took out a full-page A7 ad in today's Washington Post, surfacing a timeline of Hagel's anti-gay record.

But Hagel also has his defenders, as well as those who might just be willing to hear him out, among gay-rights groups and Israel lobbyists.

Notably, the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network, which gained prominence in the gay-rights community during the "don't ask, don't tell" repeal push, released a measured statement from Executive Director Allyson Robinson, stating that "if confirmed, [Hagel] will be an effective leader for the Pentagon," while calling on him to fully endorse gay rights in the military.

HP announces two affordable thin-and-lights, including one with a touchscreen

Geez Louise, folks. HP's notebook lineup is starting to get confusing. So confusing, in fact, that we feel compelled to offer a little primer before we get to what it is the company announced today. Rewinding to sometime last year, the company came out with its first Ultrabooks. Then it unveiled so-called Sleekbooks, which basically hold the same promise as Ultrabooks, except that for whatever reason (AMD processors, a too-thick chassis) they don't meet Intel's official Ultrabook requirements. Still with us? Alrighty. Well, since then HP has released Sleekbooks under its mid-range Envy brand, and also its lower-cost Pavilion line. That's a lot of thin-and-light laptops that aren't technically Ultrabooks.

Anyway, flash back to the present and we've got two new Pavilion Sleekbooks, one of which has a touchscreen. They're officially called the Pavilion TouchSmart Sleekbook and the Pavilion Sleekbook and, well, you can guess which is which. Regardless of the model, some key features remain the same: both have 15.6-inch (1,366 x 768) displays, replaceable batteries and numpads, along with trackpads that support Windows 8 gestures (that's true of most new laptops, actually). Both make use of the company's CoolSense technology, which we can easily vouch for by now, having tested so many HP notebooks. As for design, these look more or less like the Pavilion Sleekbooks announced back in September, with three color choices and HP's Imprint finish, whose in-laid pattern does a good job hiding fingerprints.

It's in the spec department that these two laptops start to differ. Though both models will be offered with AMD Trinity processors only, the TouchSmart starts with an AMD A8 chip and 6GB of RAM, while the non-touch version starts with an A6 APU and four gigs of memory. The hard drive capacity varies, too: the non-touch one starts with 500GB of space, while the TouchSmart has 750GB. As you can imagine, the touchscreen version is thicker, but only slightly: it measures 23mm thick, versus 21mm. Look for the non-touch Sleekbook to go on sale this month, starting at $499. The TouchSmart will land in February, priced from $699. In the meantime, we've got hands-on shots of both waiting for you after the break.

McConnell takes wait-and-see approach on Hagel

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Senate's top Republican says he'll need to take a close look at what former Sen. Chuck Hagel ? who's the front-runner to be the next defense secretary ? has said in the past on Israel and Iran.

Sen. Mitch McConnell says that the next Pentagon chief must have a complete understanding of the U.S. relationship with ally Israel and the threat from Iran.

Some of Hagel's former Senate colleagues have questioned his pronouncements on Iraq, Israel and the Middle East. McConnell tells ABC's "This Week" that Hagel "has certainly been outspoken" on certain foreign policy matters.

McConnell says that if Hagel is nominated, he wants to see if the former Nebraska senator's views "make sense for that particular job."

Newspaper: Introduce to car audio/video system | Autocardvdgps ...

Car audio/video system which is named car AV, 12-volt,mobile audio and other terms are used to describe the video or?sound system fitted in an automobile. While 12-volt audio/video systems are also marketed, used or manufactured for marine,?buses and aviation.?We will introduce?on cars as the most common application.

From the earliest days of radio, enthusiasts had adapted domestic equipment to use in their cars. In the 1960s, tape players using reel to reel equipment, Compact Cassettes, and then 8-track cartridges were introduced for in-car use.

A stock car audio system refers to the OEM application that the vehicle?s manufacturer specified to be installed when the car was built. A large after market industry exists where the consumer can at their desire replace many or all components of the stock system.

In modern cars, the primary control device for an audio system is commonly referred to as a head unit, and is installed in the center of the dash panel between the driver and the passenger. In older vehicles that had audio components as an option, such devices were mounted externally to the top of or underneath the dash. Car speakers often use space-saving designs such as mounting a tweeter directly over a woofer or using non-circular cone shapes. Subwoofers are a specific type of loudspeaker for low frequency reproduction. Extremely loud sound systems in automobiles, which have been nicknamed ?boom cars?, may violate the noise ordinance of some municipalities.

Stock unit
A stock car audio system refers to the OEM application that the vehicle?s manufacturer specified to be installed when the car was built. A large after market industry exists where the consumer can at their desire replace many or all components of the stock system.

Speakers

A set of speaker drivers removed from a passenger vehicle.Car speakers are largely functionally identical to any other loudspeaker design with key components specialized for use in mobile environments, and generally serve an identical purpose. One major key design difference is mult-axial mounting of different types of loudspeakers in the same footprint, such as a tweeter directly mounted over a woofer. Another key difference is non-circular cone shapes, such as square, oval, or even triangular. Both of these features reflect a significant reduction in space and size that a speaker may occupy in a vehicle cabin.

Material construction may also include more exotic and hearty components more suitable to mobile use. Marine speakers may have plating for corrosion resistance. Cones may be coated with a substance to resist expansion and contraction under high vehicle cabin temperatures, known to reach 140 ?F (60 ?C) in the sun. Subwoofers may also be found in mobile audio applications where a cabin speaker may lack the desired low frequency response on its own.

Before stereo radio was introduced, the most common speaker location was in the middle of the dashboard pointing through perforations towards the front windshield. In most modern applications, speakers are mounted certain common locations including the front deck (or dash), the rear deck (or parcel shelf), the kick panel (located in the footwell below the A-pillar,) or the doors. In the case of subwoofers, mountings are usually under the seat or in the trunk. Each position has certain strengths and limitations from both a quality of sound, and a vehicle manufacturing perspective.

5.1 and even 7.1 channel surround sound systems, as well as THX II Certified, are now being integrated into some cars by both aftermarket enthusiasts and car manufacturers themselves. These systems include the full complement of front left, right and center speakers along with rear right and left surround speakers.

Amplifiers

A car audio amplifier.
Blaupunkt Class T amplifierBasically a mobile audio amplifier, a car ?amp? is a term used to refer to a dedicated electronic amplifier separated from the other components of the system. Though most head units have an amplifier, some do not, or lack the desired power or additional features (e.g., equalization controls or crossover systems). External amplification is available and most often used when existing amplification is insufficient. External amplifiers can be mounted in a different part of the car than the ?head unit?; in many cases, an additional amp is mounted in the trunk. This is usually the case when powering a subwoofer, where desired wattage may be several multiples more compared to other cabin speakers.

Though less common, OEM external amplification can be found in ?premium? audio packages, or in luxury cars. More common is aftermarket amplification installed later to satisfy the expansion of an existing system in some way. During operation, it is common for a vehicle?s charging system to fluctuate, so a regulated amplifier will maintain its power output regardless of voltage fluctuation. Amplifiers rated at 100 watts at 14.4 volts can not be regarded equal as to an amplifier that can maintain 100 watts at 12 volts. Outside of certain standards, it is not uncommon for manufacturers to list a 14.4 rating and not post a 12 volt value.

Head unit

A Panasonic single DIN head unit, combining radio, CD and MP3In modern cars, the primary control device for an audio system is commonly referred to as a head unit, and is installed in the center of the dash panel between the driver and the passenger. In older vehicles that had audio components as an option, such devices were mounted externally to the top of or underneath the dash.

The headunit itself is usually a multi-purpose device that houses multiple types of components in its housing. The most common components are a radio receiver/tuner usually with AM and FM bands, and a small amplifier for driving an audio signal to speakers. Other possible components include various media devices, such as (in older vehicles) a tape player (either 8-track or cassette), CD player, DVD player, Minidisc, USB flash memory, and even a hard disk drive typically used in notebook computing. Many head units also feature a DSP component, and equalization component (such as bass and treble controls), or a control interface for another feature on the car (such as a back-up/parking camera, navigation system, trip odometer, etc).

Due to auto manufacturing differences over the years, aftermarket headunit products are manufactured in multiple form factors. The primarily used size is mostly referred to by its legacy name of DIN, which refers to ISO 7736. DIN headunits come as single DIN or double DIN. A third less common standard is used mostly by Chrysler group and for a time Mitsubishi in their OEM devices.

Dampening

Sound deadening material is often used in the door cavities and boot/trunk area to dampen excess vibration of the panels in the car in response to loud subwoofer bass tones, especially the boot/trunk. The most common type of deadening is either butyl or rubberized asphalt, a product which has an adhesive quality and can be applied by simply pressing it into place with a roller and using a heat gun (or hair dryer). Other types of deadening can be sprayed on, but they are less common because of the additional installation difficulties.

Capacitors

A powerful after-market audio system installation in a ToyotaCapacitors are used to store energy for the amplifier to draw on demand. They come in many different sizes ranging from 0.5 farad to well over 100 farads and their intended function is to temporarily cover the short-burst electrical demands of a car audio system that have exceeded the general electrical capabilities of the vehicle. There is little evidence to suggest they impart any benefit to the system, however, due to their low energy storage (compared with the battery) and exponential nature of capacitor voltage decay.

Subwoofers

Subwoofers are a specific type of loudspeaker for low frequency reproduction. Mobile ?subs? are not very different from any other application of sub in terms of construction. However it is more common in aftermarket that visual aesthetics take on a more significant role in design than other types of sub drivers, including high contrast paint schemes, grill covers, translucent or refractive materials. Typical subwoofer drivers range in size from an 8? diameter to 10? or 12?; more rarely, some car audio system s may have 15?, 18?, 21?, 22?, 24? or even 32? subwoofers.

A subwoofer is used when existing low frequency production is unsatisfactory, either in frequency range or in volume. Design goals have led to subwoofer, both driver?s alone and whole packages, with some extreme difference from one another. Space conscious design has reduced some driver depth to 2? or less, or enclosure depth to 3?. Pure loudness through increasing sound pressure has led to some drivers with excursions as great as 4? and vented components to cool the ?motor? of the speaker. Quality and clarity has led to driver enclosures being tuned by construction to resonate or neutralize certain frequencies.

Yet another way people pick to go about browsing for auto insurance is to contact the insurers directly. If you see an ad on tv you choose up your phone and dial. This is not a poor concept, but utilizing this approach limits your insurance choices to only the biggest of companies. Plus right after you talk with this particular insurance coverage business you are left with 1 number to feel about, which does not necessarily mean that it is the best premium price tag that you can obtain. You will want to get quotes from other businesses as nicely.

Build a Website ? The First Steps | Business 2 Community

Post image for Build a Website ? The First Steps

I have clearly demonstrated that you can actually build a WordPress website within minutes, but building a successful blog is another story. When you first make that decision to build a website, you must realize that it might be a long journey, depending on what you know.

My first try at building a successful website (or blog) took me a lot longer as I was learning how to do everything at the same time. After I had the technical stuff out of the way, then came the hard part, making conversions to turn the WordPress website into a real business. However before we get to that stage, it is best to thoroughly worked through the first steps to building a website, in order to understand the rest of the process.

Many Webmasters often wonder why their blog does not make money and believe me; I used to be in the same situation, so you are not alone.

The idea

Everything starts with an idea and usually it has something to do with passion. This is the best idea to start with. It could be a passion for the subject that you want to make a blog about, a passion about succeeding, or maybe even making money for your family. It does not matter what the passion nears as long as some exists. You need to be happy when you get out of bed every day, be happy with what you are doing and success will follow.

My passion was for computers and so I started a website about that. I did not go out and buy computers.com because it was not available and I needed to dig down and grab a smaller niche. I bought the domain name computerhowto.info because that?s what the site was going to be about, but the .info?s were cheap at the time. I did not realize that I would have a better chance with a .com.

Anyway about a year later I bought Tips4pc.com and moved all the content into there. It was never a smooth road for Tips4pc. My idea never changed, I just made some minor adjustments to my up-and-coming website.

Business or Pleasure

Let?s get something straight right from the start! Do you want to build a successful blog for business or pleasure?

If you are looking for business then be prepared to put in some long hours to build up a real business. Nothing just magically happens and it is all up to you as to what results you get. If you have knowledge about something then you should use it and test it out as soon as possible. Building a business does not mean you sit back and take things casually.

If you browse through some of my articles on this website you will notice that I am all about business. I love every business because I love a challenge.

Can you believe that I thought my ComputerHowTo website would be a hobby? Even though I real Hostgator hosting (kind of committing) , somewhere in the back of my mind was telling me hobby. The problem was I already had a few real life businesses and never dreamed of giving them up (but I did give them up).

When you have concluded that you are building a website for business purposes, you then need to choose a business model for your site. Many web-masters have built amazing websites which have grown beyond anything, but they failed to monetize the site and large successful sites cost money to run. For example Twitter had no business model in mind but luckily they came up with some great ideas a few years after launching.

The Research

Research can be good and bad. It can be good if you find out that the niche that you want to explore comes up with great numbers. But research can also be bad if you find out that the topic that you are passionate about is not worth pursuing. This is the harsh reality and sometimes you might need to change your first idea to suit the research results that you come up with.

Of course we all want to go into a market that other people are interested in. This is the main key to everything.

Instead of rehashing the whole research process, I will send you to my SEO page where I have listed some very relevant articles about.

Committing Yourself

So you have a fantastic idea, and after researching it, you found out that it is a great path to take. This is the time to commit yourself to this idea and ask yourself a few questions before you do.

  • Will I build a website on this topic and later become bored with my idea?
  • Will I run out of ideas to post on my WordPress blog?
  • Are there other people interested in this topic?

The Plunge

Okay so you?ve done your research and found a keyword that is getting a good number of searches (or real people) looking for it every month. Now you can take the first plunge and buy a domain name for your new blog. You can do this first or simply buy it trough your web hosting when you buy that.

This sounds kind of drastic, but can you believe that the name for your blog is only going to cost about $10 a year. In Australia, in the real business world, a business name costs around $120 a year to register.

The next plunge is to buy hosting. Yes there are free blogs available, however this is not recommended if you are building a successful blog into a real business. If you are building a real business you must be in control of everything and not rely on free hosting.

Again let?s weigh up the cost of this plunge. Hosting one website on the Internet can cost you as little as $2.95 a month. Hosting as many websites as you want on the Internet can cost you under $10 a month. This is absolutely crazy when you consider how much it costs to lease out a business premises.

Of course when your blog becomes seriously successful you would need to upgrade this hosting to either VPS hosting (Virtual Private server) or a dedicated server. After 5 years of blogging and making money, I finally had to upgrade to a dedicated server. Now I pay around $200 a month but this is the price for success. I am not whinging.

I always look back and wonder what would have happened if I did not take the plunge and invest this pathetic amount of money into my potential business. Where would I be now?

People worry about choosing the right webhosting company and I don?t blame them because there are hundreds, if not thousands, of hosting companies fighting for your business. The unfortunate thing is that when they get your business they do not care to follow through with their promises.

This is why I recommend Hostgator web hosting as this company has followed through for me, and I have noticed that many of the top bloggers now use Hostgator. Even John Chow had a run in with Bluehost and switched to Hostgator.

Make sure you check out my free WordPress installation page that gives you the chance to have me as a backup if your install goes wrong (it won?t though, I think you are really smart :) ).

Web building software

To build a website you will need Web building software. Of course you will not need Web building software if you are an amazing Web designer, but this article is about a normal non-technical person building a website. Therefore most of you obviously know that I will recommend WordPress non-stop!

WordPress is the best content management system (CMS) and I have developed an entire website building tutorial around WordPress. Lets face it, I love it! Why wouldn?t I though? I can build a website in minutes, install a WordPress theme, and basically have the whole website up and running and possibly making money within one day. (disclaimer:depends if I can send traffic there A.S.A.P)

The Learning

Some Webmasters will tell you that the learning comes before these first few steps I have mentioned above, however I strongly disagree. I actually jumped in and took the plunge and did my learning along the way. This meant that I had a blog to use to take action with the knowledge that I had just gathered. This is the best learning tool of all.

I worry about people that are learning before they take the plunge, as it is very hard to ever stop learning and feel that you know everything about blogging. Sometimes people do not see the cut-off point and the right time to take the plunge, therefore I say take the plunge first.

If you are wondering where to find all the knowledge you need to build a successful blog, then look no further than my WordPress website basics section. After going through this, you can move on through to my other sections to help you build successful WordPress websites like I do.

Developing a Marketing Plan

In the website world there is no such thing as building your business on a high traffic main street like you can in the real world. You cannot just buy web hosting that will automatically have traffic going past your door. Marketing your business will be a major part of your success. You need to take marketing action to go out and get your customers to your website.

This is exactly why I have written so many articles about marketing that I could not even count. In fact I think my whole life revolves around marketing. Here is a sample that you probably should not miss!

Post promotion ? generate traffic for each post.

Social sharing ? add social media buttons to your website.

Website traffic ? 20 often forgotten traffic tips.

Building links ? Link building is a big part of Off page SEO.

Think about what your marketing plan is and how you are going to generate traffic for your website. I started out article marketing and I still do this now. I cannot believe how everything is still the same. Of course we have social media now and this is a big plus for all.

I remember when I got my first digg and had no idea what it was! LOL

Anyway you will develop your own marketing plan and it may change depending on what you like to do. There are probably 1000 ways to promote your website or blog but you have to make the choice of which ones that you will use.

Building a Solid WordPress Website

I know what it?s like to half build a website, but the ones that I have spent time laying the right foundations to, are the most successful I have. This is why I have my WordPress website checklist.

I relate my work to building a house. I might only lay one or two bricks a day for my house, but look at what I have now? I have about five finished houses (5 top websites) and many more that I am still laying bricks for. This is all because I purchased Hostgator hosting that day and laid down my $4.95 a month. It just sounds too crazy to believe.

Making Yourself Look Professional

When you build a website using WordPress, it is not difficult to make yourself look professional. There are so many tutorials on how to build a WordPress website from scratch, that you shouldn?t have any problems in finding out how to do things for yourself.

One of the best ways to make your new website look professional is to buy a premium WordPress theme. If you have a tiny bit of css or html knowledge I would clearly recommend the Thesis WordPress theme. However if you are technically challenged, I would recommend the Elegant themes package. I talk about WordPress themes all the time as they are very important to to the success of your WordPress website.

Another way to look professional is to install the right WordPress plug-ins that will perform amazing functions for you. You do not need to know how to code or do anything fancy to get your blog to look like it has been made by professional. This is the beauty of WordPress. I have mentioned most of the WordPress plugins I use on my WordPress website resources page.

Remember Why

Ask yourself why you want to start building a successful blog and make sure you are doing it for the right reasons. You will need to recall this reason in your downtimes to keep you going and moving forward. Yes there are times when you will fail, and sometimes more than the successes, but in the end you will get what you want (that?s if you really want it).
